Toy Steam Engine
I do not know a lot about these toy steam
engines but am attracted to the design and detail that went into producing these
early designs. I thought this was a Marklin, but have been told it is not.
It is in what I believe to be its original box. Elsewhere on these pages I
have another steam engine, an American made model by Edgar Side of Philadelphia
that is of the same quality and shows the same attention to detail in its construction.
That one, as evidenced by the label on the box cost $15.00 when new, so I wonder
what one like this that is even larger and more detailed would have cost.
Excellent ..... $1250.00 SOLD
The
Pioneer Steam Engine by Edgar Side of Philadelphia Penn
This toy steam engine dates from near the turn of the
last century. The box and the 2 paper labels on it help make this a very special
piece. Inside the box are the directions, and on the end panel is another
label telling exactly what this is and how much it cost back near the turn of the
century. This steam engine is in an amazing state of preservation and even if I did
pay to much it is the nicest one I have ever had. The price given on the
end panel of 15.00 was a huge sum to be paid for a toy at this time and this
special steam toy must have been aimed at a very small and well to do
segment of society. Most of the child size or toy sewing machines that we
sell were being offered for about 1.00 at the same time to give you a sense
of the difference.
I got this toy steam engine at an auction in Penn. and the under
bidder thought it was special also. This was a clear example of breaking one
of the cardinal rules of what not to do at an auction, just keep bidding till you
own it because it could well end up costing you much more than you were expecting
to pay, and more than it was worth. I remember doing the same thing over
a group of golf clubs one day at another auction, paying way too much, and after
the dust settled the under bidder asking me which was the good one.
I thought he knew and just had him figured as cheap. I lost a good deal of
money on those clubs. Excellent . . . . . SOLD
Model
Steam Engine
Steam engines such as this one that date
from near the turn of the century were often times used for small applications,
to power small tools and machines, while others were built as toys or as models
of larger ones. The most famous of the user ones is called a Creator's after
the inventors name I would guess, and they were often found in Popcorn Wagons.
I do not know the history of this engine, but it is well done and finely machined.
It is one of the few steam related antiques that I have kept over the years, but
it like many of the other pieces on these pages is available for trade for other
interesting antiques or devices that I would be interested in.
Blue
Toy Steam Engine
This very nice looking
steam engine is remarkably similar to the Edgar Side that I have pictured above
but it is unmarked. The blued steel boiler shows little signs of ever having been
fired. I have been told that Weeden bought out Side at some point
and that may well be who the maker of this engine is. I have had folks contact
me about the one just above, and they can tell the difference, so it must just be
a learning curve thing, as I do not recognize one from from the other.Excellent . . . . . $295.00 SOLD
Crosby Steam Engine Indicator Hook
this device onto the correct hole or port on your antique steam engine, set
it up with the right spring, fire the engine up, wind this up, and it will then
draw you a picture of just how well she is running. That was the basic idea
anyway, but as I have never seen one in use I am not sure if everything is here
or not. It sure looks complete though.
Good........ $195.00 SOLD
