Cretors Co Chicago Ill. Popcorn Machine Steam EngineCretors Co. of Chicago Ill. #8284 Popcorn Machine Steam Engine   This original Cretor steam engine is off of a popcorn machine and dates from shortly after the turn of the century.  The brass id tag w/ the maker and patent info are on the cast iron base.   It has a couple condition issues.  A small portion of one of the flyball governors is missing.  It is a small projection that allows one ball to move up and down.  I believe it would be a pretty easy fix.  The nickel plating on the main wheel and elsewhere is peeling and has losses.  A lot of the base has no finish on it.  I cleaned it up removing some rust and a lot of greasy gunk.  It looks pretty good now.  It turns over nicely now and seems like it would be fully operational with some further restoration.

Good  . . . . . $1450.00   SOLD!!

Brunner Mfg. Co. Utica NY. #10 CompressorBrunner Mfg. Co. Utica NY. #10 Compressor  Not sure what these small compressors were used for or on, but it has a neat look.  It has all sorts of compression and turns over nicely.  There is a weld on one side down near the base. (see pic)  Not sure if it is a repair or factory.  It does not leak from that area.

Good  . . . . . $75.00      SOLD!!

19th Century Model Steam Engine19th Century Model of Horizontal Steam Engine This 19th century steam engine is well executed and a very nice  example of a machinist's or engineers work.   It is over 20" long and weighs close to 40 lb .  It is mounted on a solid Mahogany wooden base that has tapered sides.  The base of the steam engine is cast iron that mounts to the wooden base.  The barrel for the steam engine is wooden as is typical in many of these early engines.  The main flywheel is cast iron with serpentine arms.  It measures approx 6" across and still retains most of its original green finish.

The details and machining are really nice. It is unmarked as far as I can see.  Note the reversing lever mounted on the left rear side. Also note how the main shaft is supported / guided on both sides.    It turns over freely, but has not been tested with air or otherwise.
It is similar in size to a Creators, or steam engines used to run popcorn or coffee roasting machines, but I believe it is a model of a much large unit that would have been used to run small factories or businesses back in the era of steam, and before the use of electricity became widespread.

Good + . . . . . $1495.00         SOLD!

German Toy Steam EngineGerman Toy Steam Engine  I do not know a lot about these toy steam engines but am attracted to the design and detail that went into producing these early designs.  I thought this was a Marklin, but have been told it is not.  It is in what I believe to be its original box.  Elsewhere on these pages I have another steam engine, an American made model by Edgar Side of Philadelphia that is of the same quality and shows the same attention to detail in its construction.  That one, as evidenced by the label on the box cost $15.00 when new, so I wonder what one like this that is even larger and more detailed would have cost.

Excellent . . . . . $1250.00         SOLD

The Pioneer Steam Engine by Edgar Side of Philadelphia PennThe Pioneer Steam Engine by Edgar Side of Philadelphia Penn This toy steam engine dates from near the turn of the last century.  The box and the 2 paper labels on it help make this a very special piece.  Inside the box are the directions, and on the end panel is another label telling exactly what this is and how much it cost back near the turn of the century.  This steam engine is in an amazing state of preservation and even if I did pay to much it is the nicest one I have ever had.  The price given on the end panel of 15.00 was a huge sum to be paid for a toy at this time and this special steam toy must have been aimed at a very small and well to do segment of society.  Most of the child size or toy sewing machines that we sell were being offered for about 1.00 at the same time to give you a sense of the difference.  I got this toy steam engine at an auction in Penn. and the under bidder thought it was special also.  This was a clear example of breaking one of the cardinal rules of what not to do at an auction, just keep bidding till you own it because it could well end up costing you much more than you were expecting to pay, and more than it was worth. I remember doing the same thing over a group of golf clubs one day at another auction, paying way too much, and after the dust settled the under bidder asking  me which was the good one.  I thought he knew and just had him figured as cheap.  I lost a good deal of money on those clubs.

      Excellent   . . . . .$695.00        SOLD

Steam Engine ModelModel Steam Engine  Steam engines such as this one that date from near the turn of the century were often times used to power small applications, small tools and machines, while others were built as toys or as models of larger steam engines.  The most famous is called a Creator's after  the inventors name and they were often found in Popcorn Wagons.  I do not know the history of this engine, but it is well done and finely machined.

Excellent . . . . .$1495.00        SOLD

Blue Toy Steam EnginBlue Toy Steam Engine   This very nice looking steam engine is remarkably similar to the Edgar Side that I have pictured above but it is unmarked. The blued steel boiler shows little signs of ever having been fired.    I have been told that Weeden bought out Side at some point and that may well be who the maker of this engine is.

Excellent . . . . . $295.00          SOLD

Steam IndicatorCrosby Steam Engine Indicator  Hook this device onto the correct hole or port  on your antique steam engine, set it up with the right spring, fire the engine up, wind this up, and it will then draw you a picture of just how well she is running.  That was the basic idea anyway, but as I have never seen one in use I am not sure if everything is here or not.  It sure looks complete though.

Good . . . . . $195.00        SOLD

Steam Engine IndicatorSteam Engine Indicator  Looks complete w/ book.

Good . . . . . $195.00        SOLD

Crosby Steam IndicatorCrosby Steam Indicator Patented 1895 w/ Reducing Wheel Attachment    These interesting devices were used to produce a graphic chart illustrating the condition and performance of steam engines for the owner / operator.  You could chart the power, and operating efficiency as well as other factors using one of these.  You would hook the main unit up to a port on the steam engine or tractor, and depending on the size of the engine use a different spring and rule to read the chart that the engine would produce on the paper chat it drew on the revolving drum..  The process is better explained on this page  http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Indicator/Indicator1.htm at the www.OldEngine.org site

The overall condition is very nice noting that the top half of the lock for the Mahogany box is missing.  It seems to be very complete, and an early model given the patent dates and the 1902 date of the hard to find instruction book that is also present.  There are detailed instructions in here, and many illustrations including pictures of the charts and instructions on how to interpret them.   It is in very nice condition.

Also included are 3 boxwood rules marked 10, 50, & 80. The shutoff valve, and the original oil bottle is still in the holder in the corner.   There is a small wooden container for leads and some additional string as well.  This set is also outfitted with what  is called a reducing wheel attachment.  It can be fitted to the bottom of the main body for special applications.    I think this was bought as an accessory and made to fit into the box.  It is marked American Steam and that it is the 1898 model. I believe this outfit was related to or taken over by Crosby.   It is a tight fit in the box.

A step back in time.

Good + . . . . . SOLD!

Trill Indicator Co. of Correy PA. Faultless Steam IndicatorTrill Indicator Co. of Corry PA. The overall condition of this example appears to be good.    It seems to be complete and includes all of the parts shown in the pics.   The  Mahogany box is nice, and still has the original decal on it.

Good + . . . . .$295.00         SOLD!!

Model / Toy  Steam EngineModel / Toy  Steam Engine This is an interesting cast iron model steam engine mounted on a wood board.  It is unmarked as to maker.  Note that several of the cast mounting tabs have broken.    It  looks OK and does run on compressed air.

Pickering Steam Engine Fly Ball GovernerPickering Steam Engine Fly Ball Governor  This device was used to regulate the speed a steam engine would revolve or operate at.  As the steam engine speeded up the balls would spread out and govern or help slow down the action.

Good . . . . . $395.00         SOLD

Otis Elevator Fly Ball GovernorOtis Elevator Fly Ball Governor  This large heavy device was used to regulate the speed an elevator would fall down the shaft if the cable should break - - - - giving the break time to activate.  Oh My!

Good . . . . .$495.00        SOLD

J. I. Case T. M. Co. of Racine Wis. Steam Engine GaugeJ. I. Case T. M. Co. of Racine Wis. Steam Engine Gauge  This steam gage is in wonderful condition.  It says it is a Double Spring Traction Engine Gauge.  It was made for Case by Ashcroft.  The housing is cast iron.  Ready to go back to work.

Good + . . . . . $275.00     SOLD!

The American 9" Steam Test Gauge   The box is Oak and dovetailed, and the gauge itself looks to have seen little if any use.  The red sticker is an inspection sticker, so I assume we can assume it works.  It is solid brass or bronze and has no apologies.  The pictures should pretty much tell you the rest of the story.  You will not be disappointed in the condition.

Good . . . . . SOLD

Trill Indicator Co. of Corry PA. Faultless Steam Indicator   Steam indicators were used to produce a graphic chart illustrating the condition and performance of steam or other engines for the owner / operator.  You could chart the power and operating efficiency as well as other factors using one of these.  You would hook the main unit up to a port on the steam engine or tractor, and depending on the size of the engine use a different spring and rule to read the chart that this device would produce on the paper chart it drew on the revolving drum.

The overall condition of this example appears to be good.    It seems pretty complete and includes all of the parts shown in the pics.  There is just one rule, two valves and several springs.  There is a stack of the graph paper with some having the Trill name on them.   The  Mahogany box is OK noting that the dividing wall in the top compartment to hold the paper is missing.

Good  . . . . . $225.00     SOLD!!

19th Century Model Steam Engine19th Century Dual Piston / Cylinder Horizontal Model Steam Engine This 19th century model steam engine is an interesting and well executed example.  It is mounted on a Mahogany wood board and has turned wooden pad feet that allow a portion of the main flywheel to sit down below the main platform.

The detail and machining are really nice. It is marked P Williams Engineer the the top of the brass hip roofs covering the main cylinders.  This fabulous looking steam engine measures just about 18' long. Note the reversing lever in the center just in front of the cylinders. Also note that the exhaust pipes fit into the board when not in use, and pull out to insert into the sides of the steam cylinders when operating.  It turns over freely, but has not been tested with air or otherwise.

Fine  . . . . . SOLD!

Marklin Toy Steam Engine / Boiler & Electric DynamoMarklin Toy Steam Engine / Boiler & Electric Dynamo   This is a nice example of the German toy maker Marklin work during the height of their toy making period before WWII.  I believe it is a  Märklin No. 4097 or 4098 with Dynamo dating from the 1930's.  It is marked on the boiler door and dynamo with the Marklin name.   It has a double-action steam cylinder that powers the 2.5 volt electric dynamo.   The 3 1/8 in. dia. boiler is 10 ¼ in. long.  The enameled metal base is 14 ½ x 14 ½ in., and the overall height 13 ¾ in. to top of original stack.   The alcohol burner is present.  This toy has been played with and is in good + original condition but has not been run to test it recently.  Nice.

Good + . . . . . $395.00
