Walker
Patent Plow Plane This is a crazy
design for a plow plane. It has a series of metal plates that can be
shifted to different positions to conform to the wood and the the 15 cutters
that were provided. I bet it was not a popular item. Edwin
walker is also known for his patented inc cream scoop, and for holding the
patent on one of the most well designed and popular corkscrews.
Good + . . . . . $995.00 SOLD
Phillips
Patent Plow Plane This is a very nice plane that is in excellent condition.
Russell Phillips was first granted the patent for this design plane in 1867.
He hailed from Gardiner, Maine. He was later issued a couple more patents
for improvements to the design. This is one of the later models of this original
design that was offered before the "improved" version was introduced in about 1871.
The condition of this example is wonderful. Note the original Rosewood handle
and graceful horn. The thumb screw for the depth stop has been modified to
facilitate tightening it, it should be round but has been squared off to allow for
a better grip. The rest of the plane is original and very nice.
A fine example that deserves a place in any collection focused on Patented metallic
planes of the 19th century. It is a winner. Super!!
Good + . . . . . $1450.00 SOLD
Phillips Patented Improved
Plow Plane This is one of the later models by the same name
as the plane above. This example is marked on all the parts #66 which I assume
is the assembly #. Overall the condition is good with some of the decoration
and highlights still remaining on portions. The fence does not seem to want
to tighten on the rod properly, but I did not fuss with it. The small depth
stop and screw for it are missing.
Good + . . . . . $1095.00 SOLD
Pattern
Makers Plane This is a nice set. The plane itself has the early
look of an English Spiers, Norris or Mathieson style plane. Most of the 11
cutters are marked Buck Brothers. A couple have been replaced. The 11
bottoms lock on in the rear on a dovetail as can be seen, and through the front
handle in front. A nice example.
Good + . . . . . $195.00 SOLD
Fales Patent Combination Plane The Fales Patent plane is one of the most complicated
patented combination woodworking planes that was ever manufactured. It took two
bottoms, a cutter, plus a few more pieces to make a simple cut. This one is
complete with all the various pieces. The history of this plane is interesting
also, and has its roots traced back to Otis Smith of Smith and Wesson gun fame.
It dates from the late 1800's, and had a very limited production run as it
immediately became clear that they were not going over well, and it became evident
that the buying public even back then was familiar with the marketing phrase KISS.
Still in shiny-nice new condition and as a bonus even has some of the original promotional
paper that came with it.. These are found, but never in this condition or
to this degree of completeness.
Good + . . . . . $1295.00 SOLD
Mayo's
Improved Patented Plow Plane This unusual patented plane
Is most commonly referred to as a Mayo's Patent, but is also known as "The Boss
Plane" which is cast into the side as well as the patent information. This
plane went through a series of design changes during its few short years of manufacture,
and this is one of the last variations. Several people marketed it and Mayo was
the final owner of the rights and patent. One of the nicest features if that
the name Mayo is spelled out in script on the brass or gunmetal screws. Earlier
versions are known as the Phillips Patent Plow, and were marketed by Babson and
Reppelier of the Boston Tool Co.
Good + . . . . . $2395.00 SOLD
