Mathieson Rosewood Infill Closed Handle Panel PlaneMathieson Rosewood Infill Closed Handle Panel Plane  This 16 1/2 "  Rosewood Infill Panel plane is marked as to maker with a bold stamp on the front infill.  The cutter is marked as well.  The throat is perfect and as fine as any English Mitre Plane.  It is in very nice condition in all respects.  The chamfered or bevel edge of the steel sides which are dovetailed to the bottom is great.  There is no pitting or rust.  The cutter is proper measures 2 1/2" and is marked with the makers name.  There is approx 1" left to the slot.

Good . . . . . . $795.00       SOLD

Mathieson Infill Closed Handle Panel PlaneMathieson 15 1/4" Walnut Infill Plane  Here is a beautiful example of Scottish craftsmanship & workmanship. It is a tribute to the beauty of the tools which were produced across the pond during an earlier period. The condition of the walnut infill plane could not be any nicer.  The lever cap is clearly stamped Mathieson, and it has a very nice Ward cutter and chip breaker in it.  These super form and very heavy planes are wonderful to both look at and to use.  This example weighs in at nearly 10 pounds and if you are looking for something heavy to push around the shop this one will fit the bill.  A Stanley Bedrock of approx the same length weighs in at under 7lbs. as a comparison.   Both the wood infill and the metal body are like new and this plane shows little evidence of ever doing more than sitting up on the shelf.  Super!!

Good . . . . . .$695.00       SOLD

Spiers Rosewood Infill Plane Rosewood Infill Plane  By one of the top makers of infill planes.  There is some pitting on the side rail and it has been cleaned and polished.  The sole and throat are nice.  Ready to go back to work or go on display.    Nice!!

Good . . . . .  $495.00       SOLD

vintage Infill Planes3 Handled Rosewood Planes  These three rosewood planes appear to have been made by the same hand.  Two of them are stamped on the nose A S but the handles are so similar I am sure the same fellow made them.   The two larger ones are about 1" different in length and 1/4 inch or so different in width.  The shorter one has a round bottom.  The longest one is just under 22" long  Very Showy and these are becoming near impossible to find anymore.

Good . . . . . . $150.00 / ea       SOLD

Skew Cut English Hollow & Round Planes18 Matched Skew Cut English Hollow & Round Planes    This set of 18 matched hollows & rounds are in near mint, near unused condition.  There was a bit of rust on some of the cutters which I have since cleaned, but they show no signs of use or abuse.

Skew sets of Hollow & Rounds are 10 times harder to find than straight cut versions.  These planes are double stamped with two well known and respected makers / distributors of English Planes.  Preston and Varvill & Sons. Special.

Excellent . . . . . . $1095.00 / set    SOLD!

Coppers 4 Cutter Stave or Jointer Plane  This is a very early and unusual coopers plane.  Typical ones have a long body, but usually only one cutter.  This one is set up with 4.  From the looks of it this plane was designed to be used from either end to perform different functions.  Note the profile shot.  One end has square cutters and the other end has cutters with a hollow grind to them.  The tag that came with this stated it came from the Ken Roberts collection.  It was originally bought in the 70's by the collector here.  Just a super plane in super condition.

Good........ $395.00       SOLD

Patented Wooden PlaneJ. F. & G. M. Patented July 2nd 1878 Jointer Plane  The assumption is that the patent date and initials behind the handle on this nice looking plane are for the reinforcing rod that is running through the handle.  The handles on these types of planes are often found broken off and this is an idea that seems plausible and needed, and this is the only example with this type of feature that I have ever seen.  Other than the rod in the handle it is a pretty typical looking Beech jointer plane.  The condition is superb, and the mark on the front is 2 star A1 mark from Tom Elliot's new revised edition of American Wooden Planes. My first attempt at researching the patent date stamped on this plane was a failure. That can be explained in a number of ways, but reflects mostly I suppose on my time spent on this.  It may also be a bogus date put there for any number of reasons.  This was often done by folks to scare the competition away from stealing an idea that was not quite ready for the market. Or it may have been the submission date and not the issue date.  In any case it is a situation that deserves further research that I just do not have the time or inclination for right at this moment.    The patent date stamp is shown in one of the pics below.  If it is right it is a winner. Super!!

Good........ $395.00       SOLD

Panel Raising PlanePanel Raising Plane  This 3 1/2" wide skew Panel Raiser is a very rare and hard to find style of plane.  This example was made by E. & C. Carter of Troy NY and measures approx 18" long.  The makers mark is very clear and readable.  The condition is superb, and it has no problems or issues that need attention.  In addition to the skewed cutter note the moveable fence and the special 1/2" nicker.  Just a super plane in super condition.

Good........ $395.00       SOLD

Stair Rail PlanesPair of German Stair Rail Planes  These came from one of the David Stanley Auctions over in England some 20 years back.  They were one of the highlights of the collection and display in the now closed hardware store they hung in for 20 some years.  Super!!!

Good........ $695.00 / pr       SOLD

Unmarked Crown Molding Plane  This crown molder appears to be unmarked.  It measures 4 1/2" from the inside of the fence to the edge of the plane.   The previous owner has applied a fence as can be seen and I believe the pull stick is a newer replacement.   It is straight, and the cutter is nice.  Crown molders are becoming hard to find and this one is a pretty nice example.

Good........ $245.00       SOLD

Crown Molding Plane  This 3 1/2" wide crown molder is marked with 3 initials in the front where the makers name would appear.  It looks to be S P G.  It is straight, and the cutter is nice. The handle looks very early and this one may date from very close to the 18th century.  Also note the nicely done hardwood strike button on the front.  All in all a nice example of a style of plane that is becoming increasingly more difficult to find.

Good........ $225.00       SOLD

Antique Wooden PlaneCurved Smooth Plane This is a super nice piece with the carvings, and Heart shaped throat.  It is also dated.  The front handle needs to be restored to bring this superb iece back to its full glory.  Very unusual.

Good ........ $295.00       SOLD

Crown Molding Plane This 3" wide molder is a nice example of a style of plane that is becoming increasingly more difficult to find.  There is no makers mark I can see.

Good........ $95.00       SOLD

Tower of Sudbury Mass. Complex Molding Planes  According to the newest version of American  Wooden Planes by Emil and Martyl Pollak, & newly edited by Thomas Elliot, John Tower was born in 1758 and worked in Sudbury Mass north of Worchester in the early 1800's.  He died in 1846.  There is an anecdotal story about him being a bit touched in his later years, but the fellow who made these was obviously a craftsman near his peak as they are superb examples of craftsmanship and form.  All aspects of these two planes are near flawless and the wedges and heavy chamfers have that special feel of age and quality.  Super condition, and very nice profiles about says it all for these 2 superior molding planes.   Rare

Good........ $575.00       SOLD

Table Leaf Joint Plane by M. & N. H. Stout of St. Louis. This is a difficult maker to find, as are any planes from west of the Miss.  Their working dates were from 1838-49 and were hardware dealers in St. Louis after that.  This one has an unusual cut which looks like a table joint to me.  It is uncleaned, but will look great with just a light cleaning, but I will leave that to your tastes.  The makers mark is clear and strong and the cutter and wedge are nice.

Good........ $35.00       SOLD

P Sargent Concord New Hampshire 1" Boxed Bead This plane is 9.5" long, and is made of beech..  Everything is here and proper, and the condition is very nice overall.

Good........ $35.00       SOLD

D. Amsden Tongue Plane  This plane is made of beech..  Everything is here and as can be seen it has been slightly modified to cut a smaller tongue.  The condition is OK overall on this early plane by a hard to find maker. Note the nice shape of the primitive sleeper style wedge.

Good........ $45.00       SOLD

B. Frogatt This molding plane is 9 3/4" long.  The makers mark is not listed in Pollack's last book, and so it may be English.  It has those characteristics that could make it either American, or English.  It appears to be made of Beech, but the wedge profile and the extra 1/4" in length give one pause.  It has a complex stepped profile that is not very deep.  All in all a nice example.

Good........ $95.00       SOLD

Infill Smooth Plane  This plane is unmarked as to maker. Like the one above, it is a bit cruder than is typical of these.  The wedge, and the lips applied to the inside of the frame to hold it appear to be an afterthought.  The top of the handle needs some attention as well.  The cutter is set up properly and the opening with the cutter in place is nice.

Good........ $95.00       SOLD

Closed Handle English Infill Smooth Plane  This plane is unmarked as to maker.  The cutter is marked Alex Mathieson.  It is in very nice condition noting the chip in the top of the handle.

Good........ $295.00       SOLD

Closed Handle English Infill Plane  This plane is unmarked as to maker.  The cutter is marked Sorby.  It is in sound condition noting the pitting on the sides.  It is 13 3/4" long

Good........ $195.00       SOLD
