Keen
Kutter / Simmons Hardware K 9 3/4 Tailed Block Plane
This unusual Keen Kutter tailed block plane is marked
K 9 3/4 on the lateral. Given the style of the cap, and the round handy features on the
side rails I believe this was made by Ohio Tool Co., one of the several
companies that Simmons Hardware Co of St Louis MO. used to make their
different lines of tools and planes which Simmons then branded with
their famous trade name Keen Kutter.
The overall condition is
fine with well over 90% of the original japanning, and no rust, pitting, or
other condition issues. It has a nice long properly marked cutter as
well. A pretty rare piece in the scheme of things. One would
expect to see 100 Stanley 9 3/4 planes for every one of these that turns up.
An opportunity ready for the collection.Fine . . . . . . $ 375.00

Simmons
Hardware Keen Kutter No. KK 9 1/2 Block Plane

Keen
Kutter / Simmons Hardware K 4 1/2 C Corrugated Bottom Large Smooth Plane (Bedrock 604
1/2 C) Everything about this unusual and hard to find
plane is nice. Simmons Hardware marketed their line of planes
under the Keen Kutter name and over the years had several different tool
or plane makers produce planes for them. For a few years just after the
turn of the century they had Stanley make their planes based on
Stanley's Bedrock plane design. These Stanley made planes were denoted as the K series. The
K 4 1/2 and
K 2 are the hardest to find of this type. These bedrock like planes date from
shortly after the turn of the century and have all the same features of
early Bedrocks including the bedrock milled frog and adjustment detail. It really
is a
superior design for several reasons, but Simmons was always mindful of the dollar and later
planes, designated as KK, were made by other outfits who put in cheaper bids, and this Bedrock
like design was dropped.
Very Nice!!

They came in sizes K2 thru K8.
These Bed Rock like planes have all the same features of
early Stanley Bed Rocks including the milled frog and external frog adjuster. It really is a
superior design, then and now.
This example is in good condition. The rear handle is Rosewood and

great user at a fraction of the cost of an early Stanley 605 1/2 or some new remake

Simmons Hardware Keen Kutter KK 5
C Corrugated Bottom Jack Plane
This KK 5 jack plane was made by Ohio Tool for Simmons hardware and then
branded with their KK # & logo. It is a very nice condition plane.
Typically Keen Kutter planes were about used to death by the Midwest folks where
Simmons hardware's main buyer crowd hailed from. This one made it to the
west coast and led a relatively easy life afterward.
I lightly cleaned it. The are no structural issues and little to no rust or
pitting. Full length, proper logo, good cutter. 85% or better of the original japanning. Great knob & handle.
Nice enough for any collection. Nice!!Good + . . . . . $50.00

it has a proper low front knob. It has been lightly cleaned. The one aology
is it has a Stanley cutter in it and not one marked Keen Kutter.
Tuned, cleaned and set up properly. This K% / 605 will make for a

Keen
Kutter K 5 Jack Plane (Stanley 605 Bed Rock) Simmons
Hardware contracted out to Stanley to provide their line of bench planes for
a few years back around 1910. At that time they opted for the Bed Rock
design / style with
the mated frog to body design. They numbered them with a single K and the size,
K2 thru K8. Later Simmons would use Ohio, Sargent and others to make their line of
planes. These are usually marked KK 5.
Some light pitting. The wood is OK noting it has remains of a dark finish on it. Cutter is
proper and OK. It will detail out to be nicer and will be a great user for
reasonable money.
A Bed Rock design plane, considered by many to be the finest ever, at less than half the price of a typical Stanley model.
Opportunity.

Simmons
Hardware / Keen Kutter K 5 C Corrugated Bottom (Stanley Bed Rock) Jack Plane Super
original condition. The Rosewood handle looks great. It has a proper low Rosewood front
knob. Long proper marked cutter. Top shelf condition for the collection, or

Simmons Hardware did not make planes. They sold other makers planes branded with their
name. Simmons Hardware marketed their line of planes under the Keen
Kutter name and over the years had several different tool makers like
Stanley, Ohio, and Sargent Tools make planes for them under contract.

Kutter / Simmons Hardware K 5 Jack Plane (Bedrock 605) This
jack plane is in overall nice used condition. It was made for Simmons
by Stanley shortly after the turn of the century. It is a Bedrock with
all the superior features those planes design possessed. The
original japanning is approx. 80%. No rust or pitting to speak of, proper
marked long cutter, good throat. Good wood. A good plane priced
reasonably. Good . . . . . . $ 75.00

This example is in good condition noting light pitting throughout. It may have a replaced front
knob. Cleaned or lapped and tuned up properly this will make for a
great user at a fraction of the cost of an early 603 or some new remake

KK / Keen Kutter #71 Router Plane
The Keen Kutter / KK line of planes and tools was E. C.
Simmons flagship line of planes that they had others make for them. E. C. Simmons were masters of marketing objects with their name
on them that they had others make for them. Stanley made this for them.
The
plating on this hard to find router is over 90% and this
router plane saw little use. It came to me with both blade holders shown and I am not
sure if that is original or not. One has the depth adjuster, and one does
not. That would seem to make sense for when using it
as an open throat model using it in reverse. There is just one cutter.
These are much harder to find than their Stanley 70 / 71 Router counterparts. A nice
example.
Good + . . . . . $85.00 SOLD!!
Keen
Kutter / Simmons Hardware KK 60 Low Angle Block Plane
This low angle Keen Kutter block plane is marked
KK 60 on the toe. It looks to be the equivalent of a Stanley 60 1/2. Given the style of the cap, and the round handy features
on the side rails it was made by Ohio Tool Co., one of the several
companies that Simmons Hardware Co of St Louis MO. contracted with to make their
different lines of tools and planes which Simmons then branded with
their famous trade name Keen Kutter. Note also that it has a lateral
adjustment feature allowing the user to swing the entire blade assembly from
side to side a feature Stanley low angle block planes did not have.
The overall condition is
good with approx. 80% of the original japanning, and no pitting, or
other condition issues. It has a nice properly marked cutter. A
pretty rare piece in the scheme of things. Nice!!
Good + . . . . . . $ 50.00

Keen Kutter KK #140 Rabbit Plane
This unusual
rabbit plane looks to have been made for Simmons by Sargent. It is a rare
plane by Sargent and double so when marked Keen Kutter / Simmons. A rare
& desirable plane!!
There is a crack in the lever cap,
but it is unmarked and can be changed out easily with something proper that
will match. Or I will do it for you for an additional $50.00.
Good . . . . .$250.00 SOLD
Keen
Kutter KK #113 Compass Plane
This is a pretty nice example of a hard
to find plane sold by Simmons hardware of Keen Cutter fame. Simmons had their
planes made by different manufacturers over the years, and this one appears to be
made by Stanley. The body is marked 113, the front knob is marked properly,
and the cutter has the KK logo. The one odd feature is the frog's lateral
is marked Stanley. It looks original and proper, and doesn't look like it's
been changed out---but it's unusual for it to be marked that way.
Good+ . . . . . . .$150.00

Keen
Kutter #312 (#112) Scraper Plane
This Keen Kutter #312 Scraper
plane is in pretty nice original condition. There is well over 80% of
the original japanning. I have not had one of these in years and so the handle
looks strange to me but it also has a different body style than Stanley's and
I believe this plane was made by Ohio or Sargent for Simmons who marketed it
as a Keen Kutter. The cutter is a replacement for sure.

Keen Kutter #18 Knuckle Joint Cap Block Plane
This looks like an Ohio Tool Co. product from the configuration of the round handy feature.

Simmons
Hardware Co. Keen Kutter K 3 Smooth Plane (603 Stanley Bedrock)
Simmons Hardware had different makers produce their line of planes for them at different
periods. During was one period in the early 1900's they contracted out
the bench plane production to Stanley and ordered planes to be
designed like the Stanley Bedrock series of bench planes, with their unique
and superior frog design. These planes were marked
with a single K and the #. These would correspond to the early round side
Stanley Bedrocks and have the same design frog and adjustment as early
Stanley Bedrocks did. They were made in sizes 2 thru 8 and are of the
same quality as Stanley's line noting that the caps are unmarked and they
have a twisted lateral.
The tag indicates I sold this to the collector back in the early 90's.
Neither of us bothered cleaning it but that is all it needs to be a top shelf example
of a Bedrock quality plane.
There is no damage, and it will clean to be fine or better.
This is a pretty hard to find plane and is nice enough for the shelf, or
will make a great user.

Keen
Kutter KK #3 by Ohio Tool Co. Simmons
Hardware of St Louis MO was the premier tool and houswares distributor in the
Midwest during the early part of the last Century and before. Simmons Hdwre.
Co. Keen Kutter KK series planes were made for them by a few different
makers including Ohio Tool Co, and Sargent. This nice example was made
for them by Ohio as can be deduced by the form of the handle and the shape of
the body style. Over the years Simmons switched back and forth using different
manufacturers at different periods, I suppose because the bid for those years
was more attractive. Sargent and later Ohio made the later versions
with the Mahogany handles and 4 digit # or the no number varieties to identify
the plane. Stanley made those that have a single K preceding the # to
designate the planes #. This same numbering system is true for Winchester
planes from the same period and those planes date from the teens and 20's as
well.
This example is in super condition and has no
major defects or problems that need to be reported. It has over 95% of
the original japanning, the throat is nice, and the cuter is near full length
as well. The early and graceful style Rosewood knob and handle are very
nice also. If you look at the horn and base of this handle and compare it to
the Stanley made models it is easy to see that Ohio or another maker produced
these handles as they are notably different. It is a good one and there
will be no disappointments with this plane.
Good . . . . .$150.00 SOLD
Keen Kutter # 10 1/2 Rabbit Plane This is a
super plane and is in overall excellent condition. It is a first model
rabbeting plane with the moveable front piece to help adjust for varying types
of cuts that were to be made on different species or hardness of wood.
There is well over 90% of the original black japanning on the body, and the
sides and sole are rust-or pit-free, and simply show a beautiful even dark patina
that can only come through age and careful storage. I believe that this
plane was made by Ohio Tool Co. given the distinctive shape and style of the
rear handle being the telling feature. The cutter is proper and original
and carries the KK logo. The one apology for this plane is that there
is some chipping of, and three small crack lines at the base of the front
knob. It still works as it should, and will be fine for the display shelf,
but they are there, and I am grading it as G+ for this reason alone,
as it would otherwise easily fall into the Excellent range with no arguments.
Good . . . . .$350.00 SOLD
Keen Kutter KK #5 1/2 C by Ohio Tool Co.
This Keen Kutter KK series plane came from the same bench as the one above,
and is in similar condition. The body, the knob and handle, the cutter
etc are all nice, and this one spent most of its time on the shelf and was never
abused. It has been lightly cleaned and just exhibits a nice even brown
patina. It is a good one and there will be no disappointments with
this plane either.
Good . . . . .$85.00

Keen
Kutter K 5 C by Simmons Hardware Co. (605 Stanley Bedrock) Jack Plane
This corrugated bottom Bedrock jack plane is all original and in pretty nice overall condition. Bedrock
Style planes are considered by many to be the finest design plane ever
introduced, and these Keen Kutter / Simmons Hardware versions are being
offered here at a very attractive price compared to a Stanley Bedrock.
These were produced during the teens or twenties and are a far superior
plane over one of those new imitations available for far more money in
todays market. The
original cutter is near full length and properly marked with the Keen Kutter / Simmons
Hardware Co. logo. This plane has the
bedrock frog design with machined mating surfaces where the frog meets the base. The
rosewood handle is very nice and the japanning is 90% or
so.
Properly tuned it will make for a great user and is nice enough for the
collection shelf. Nice!!
Good + . . . . .$120.00 SOLD!!
Simmons
Hardware Co. / Keen Kutter K 5 1/2 (605 1/2 Stanley Bedrock) Extra Big Jack Plane
Simmons Hardware had different makers produce planes for them at different
periods. They did not make planes or other tools, they marketed them.
This K 5 1/2 plane was made by Stanley and has the features of a Bedrock plane the way
the frog was made. Bedrocks made by Stanley and sold by Simmons Hardware
/ Keen Kutter planes were marked with a single K and the #. This style plane would correspond to the early round side Stanley Bedrocks and
has the same design frog and adjustment designs as early Stanley Bedrocks did. They
were produced during the teens / 20's.
Later
Keen Kutter planes offered by Simmons were made by Sargent, Ohio and others. Those are marked
KK and the number or other ways.
This is a very nice example with approx. 90% of the original finish. The
cutter is near full length and there is no pitting or rust to speak of.
The early graceful Rosewood handles and knob are nice. A
nice Keen Kutter Bedrock 605 1/2 made by Stanley plane at a great price.

Keen
Kutter KK 24 Transitional Smooth Plane
There is no stamp on the nose of this
plane. The 2" wide cutter is clearly marked and would indicate it is the
size of a Stanley 24. Given the tapered cutter it was probably made by Ohio
for Simmons Hardware. Body is nice and thick, good throat, long cutter, adjuster good, etc. A nice plane. Good + . . . . . $35.00

Keen Kutter # K4C (Bedrock #604C By Stanley)
Stanley made, and in good overall condition, this early corrugated Bedrock plane
which Simmons marketed under their Keen Kutter name will make a great user.
The handle has a tight crack but otherwise the plane is very nice, proper and
original.
Good . . . . .$95.00 SOLD
Keen Kutter #K5 (Bedrock #605 By Stanley)
These Keen Kutter K series planes, as opposed to the KK series planes by Keen
Kutter are actually Bedrock planes made by Stanley for the Simmons Hardware
Co. Sargent made the later ones with the Mahogany handles and 4 digit
# to identify the plane, while the Stanley made these that have a single K preceding
the # to designate the planes #. This same # system is true for Winchester
planes from the same period and they date from the teens and 20's. This
series of "Bedrock" planes, which many hold to be the best plane ever designed
or produced, either back then or today, are a favorite with both users and collectors
alike. These planes were made by Stanley to the same exacting standards
as their own line of highly regarded Bedrock series of planes with the most
notable differences being the twisted lateral and the unmarked lever caps.
This prime example is in super condition and has no major defects or problems
that need to be reported. It has over 90% of the original japanning, the
throat is nice, and the cuter is near full length as well. The Rosewood
knob and handle are very nice also. It is a good one!!
