E.
W. Carpenter Patented Double Wedge Wooden Jointer Plane
This unusual patented design wooden jointer plane is in very nice
condition. The patent was granted to The famous PA planemaker E. W. Carpenter in 1849.
The patented double wedge feature
can be found on planes made by other PA makers as well as those like this one
made by Carpenter himself.
The stamp on the nose is very nice, and the overall condition of the plane is
nice. With a light clean it will be a standout example for the collection
of early patented planes.
The idea was 2 fold in that as the sole wore down, the tapered rear wedge could be lowered to move
the cutter forward in relation to the throat opening. It could also be
adjusted to change the angle of the cutter. Kind of a neat idea
for a real issue in wood sole planes. Metal bodied planes arrived on the
market shortly afterward and made the idea kind of irrelevant. Different & Interesting.

Handled Rosewood Planes These three rosewood planes appear to
have been made by the same hand. Two of them are stamped on the nose A S but
the handles are so similar I am sure the same fellow made them. The
two larger ones are about 1" different in length and 1/4 inch or so different in
width. The shorter one has a round bottom. The longest one is just under
22" long Very Showy and these are becoming near impossible to find anymore.

There was a bit of rust on some of the cutters which I have since cleaned, but
they show no signs of use or abuse.

straight cut versions. These planes are double stamped with two well known
and respected makers / distributors of English Planes. Preston and Varvill
& Sons. Special.

Coppers
4 Cutter Stave or Jointer Plane This is a very early and unusual coopers
plane. Typical ones have a long body, but usually only one cutter. This
one is set up with 4. From the looks of it this plane was designed to be used
from either end to perform different functions. Note the profile shot.
One end has square cutters and the other end has cutters with a hollow grind to
them. The tag that came with this stated it came from the Ken Roberts collection.
It was originally bought in the 70's by the collector here. Just a super plane
in super condition.
Good. . . . .$395.00
SOLD
Panel
Raising Plane This 3 1/2" wide skew Panel Raiser is a very rare and
hard to find style of plane. This example was made by E. & C. Carter of Troy
NY and measures approx 18" long. The makers mark is very clear and readable.
The condition is superb, and it has no problems or issues that need attention.
In addition to the skewed cutter note the moveable fence and the special 1/2" nicker.
Just a super plane in super condition.
Good. . . . .$395.00

Curved
Smooth Plane This is a super nice
piece with the carvings, and Heart shaped throat. It is also
dated. The front handle needs to be restored to bring this superb
iece back to its full glory. Very unusual.
Good . . . . .$ 295.00 SOLD
Large Wooden Barrel Makers Plane
This style of plane was for cutting the groove for
the top or bottom of a barrel or similar work like on carriages. It has a
set cutter width and a nicker for each side. It cuts about an inch wide groove
which would be an awfully large barrel. It appears the cutter is a new
replacement. The wedge may be a replacement as well but looks
good. A large and graphic example that has been hanging from the rafters for
the last 20 some years. Nice.
Good+. . . . . $195.00 SOLD!
Tailed T Rabbit
This is a nice looking plane and it has an interesting applied sole that I have not seen done before.
I am not even sure what it is made of, or how they attached it. Nice form
& Different.
Good . . . . . . .$ 75.00 SOLD!
Scandinavian Decorated & Dated Curved PlaneThis unusual plane is Scandinavian.
It is set up to cut grooves in a piece of wood in circles using the strap w/
holes to set up the diameter of the circle. I am not sure if it was for
decoration, or was meant to act as a toothing plane, or what. Very unique.
Good . . . . $150.00 SOLD!
Moving
Fillister Plane This plane was
designed to cut different width rabbits along the edge of a board. There is no makers mark
I can see.
Good . . . . .$75.00 SOLD
French Coach Makers
Side Bead Plane
This is a very nice looking specialty coachmaker's plane. The side is stamped with a lot
of info in French, but it was hard to make come up in a pic. The profile is
done in metal so that it should last another lifetime if put to use.
It belongs on the shelf though. Very nice!!
Good + . . . . . . $175.00 SOLD!

Large Oriental Apothecary or Herbal Smoothing Plane
This is a nice looking Rosewood plane. There is Oriental
Character writing on the top, but I
can not say much as I do not read or speak the language. The wood is a
heavy dense reddish color, and I am unsure if it is Rosewood or some other
exotic hardwood.. I have been told that these are for shaving herbs, roots and other food products.
Good+. . . . . $125.00
SOLD!!
Horned Wooden Smoothing Plane Unmarked. Looks European to me.. Nice form and
decoration. Very Nice!!
Fine . . . . . $75.00 SOLD!!

J.
F. & G. M. Lindsey Huntington Mass Patented July 2 1878 Beech Jointer Plane
I spent several hours looking for the patent for this, I came up empty. The assumption is that
the patent date and initials behind the handle on this nice looking Beech
jointer plane are for the reinforcing rod that is running through the handle. The handles on these
types of planes are fragile and often found broken off, and this is an idea that seems plausible
and needed. This is the only example with this type of feature that I have ever
seen.
The condition is superb, and the mark on the front is 2 star
A1 mark from Tom Elliot's new revised edition of American Wooden Planes. My failure
to find the patent can be explained in a number of ways. It may be a bogus date put there to scare the competition away from stealing
the idea. Or it may have been the submission date and not the issue date. Or - - - In any case it is a situation that deserves further
research that I just do not have the time or inclination for right now. Super!!
Good + . . . . . . $295.00
SOLD!!

family of Troy NY were well known early to mid 19th century plane makers.

originally opened shop in Troy in the 1830's and died in 1891.

small / miniature instrument makers plane is cute as a button, and not much bigger. It is in fine

Worrall Patent
Moving Fillister Multiform Molding Plane w/ Removable Handle
This is a
later example of a Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding
Planes that can be found. It has a beautiful removable Tiger Maple handle
on it. The collectors tag indicates this was as it was presented
when bought years ago at auction.
Take note of how this planes body
originally was manufactured with two slots in the top of the plane to receive a
different style handle. The foreword slot has been factory filled so that this style handle
with a single attachment point could be used. At one point Worrall
produced a style handle with a long metal base that was attached at two points, but he
dropped that idea in favor of this simpler design that was easier and cheaper to
produce. Roger Smith
discusses this situation in his 1st book, and illustrates a similar fillister plane with
the other style handle that used both slots.
The
condition is very nice overall, but the wedge while almost right does not seem
to fit just right and needs to be modified a bit to fit better. Different, early and nice!!Good . . . . . . . $225.00 SOLD!!
10 Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding Planes w/ 1857 Patent Removable Handle
Offered here is a grouping of 10 Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding
Planes. The wide molder on the right has an example of what I
believe is one of Worrall's later patents, # 18,312 granted in 1857 which covers the
design of the handle shown on the right with an adjustable cast iron base.
The
pics give an individual shot of each of the bodies. The first on the left w/ the
vertical wedge is missing its cutter. The large wide profile body on the
right with the
mounted handle is missing its wedge. Take note of pics 27 & 28 as this
body is a bit different in the way it is cut, and how it uses a second cutter as
a sort of chip breaker. Kind of different. The overall condition is very nice. The
removable handle w/ adjustable cast iron base is especially
nice. Different, early and nice!!Good . . . . . . . $375.00 / Lot SOLD!!
"C
E Chelor - Living in Wrentham" Hollow Molding Plane This
18th century molding plane was made by Cesar Chelor the former slave of
Francis Nicholson who was America's first documented
wooden plane maker. C. E. Chelor began his career as Nicholson's
apprentice, but upon Nicholson's death Cesar Chelor was willed his freedom, tools, and more. There is
a nice history of the parties involved and how things evolved at
https://www.antiquetools.com/chelor/index.html
The plane is in excellent condition
and has a beautiful form and patina. It is made of yellow birch it
has its original wedge and nice heavy chamfers. The name stamp and Living
in Wrentham location is clear and bold. There are a couple of minor chips that are insignificant.
Real Americana and a piece of African and American history at its best. Good +. . . . . $2295.00
SOLD!!
6 Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding Planes (Beads) w/ Removable Rosewood Handle
Offered here is a nice grouping of
6 Worrall Patent
Multiform Molding
Planes and one marked Rosewood handle. The planes are a set of graduated beads. One is missing its cutter and wedge.
The rest are pretty nice. They are marked on the tail with the size. 2/8 -
3/8NWC - 3/8 - 4/8 - 5/8 - 8/8.
The removable handle is Rosewood and stamped with
Worrall's original patent date
from 1854. Of all the examples shown in both of Smiths books, there are no
examples of handles made of Rosewood with the attached brass piece that this one has. A
much improved design for the tightening screw from some of his other work. Different, early and nice!!
Good . . . . . . . $495.00 / Lot

Ulmia # 496 32mm Dovetail Rabbet Plane in Original Box This
German made wood bodied plane is in like new condition. The #496
Dovetail plane is for final fitting of dovetails and has a nicker , beveled
face, and fence to make it suitable for a number of different applications.
Fine +. . . . . . $125.00 SOLD!
Unmarked
Crown Molding Plane This crown molder appears to be unmarked.
It measures 4 1/2" from the inside of the fence to the edge of the plane.
The previous owner has applied a fence as can be seen and I believe the pull stick
is a newer replacement. It is straight, and the cutter is nice.
Crown molders are becoming hard to find and this one is a pretty nice example.
Good. . . . . .SOLD
Crown
Molding Plane This 3 1/2" wide crown molder is marked with 3 initials
in the front where the makers name would appear. It looks to be S P G.
It is straight, and the cutter is nice. The handle looks very early and this one
may date from very close to the 18th century. Also note the nicely done hardwood
strike button on the front. All in all a nice example of a style of plane
that is becoming increasingly more difficult to find.
Good. . . . . .
SOLD
Crown

Tower of Sudbury Mass. Complex Molding Planes According to the newest version of American
Wooden Planes by Emil and Martyl Pollak, & newly edited by Thomas Elliot, John
Tower was born in 1758 and worked in Sudbury Mass north of Worchester in the early
1800's. He died in 1846. There is an anecdotal story about him being
a bit touched in his later years, but the fellow who made these was obviously a craftsman near his peak as they are superb
examples of craftsmanship and form. All aspects of these two planes are near
flawless and the wedges and heavy chamfers have that special feel of age and quality.
Super condition, and very nice profiles about says it all for these 2
superior molding planes. Rare
Good. . . . .
SOLD
Table Leaf Joint Plane by M. & N.
H. Stout of St. Louis. This is a difficult maker to find,
as are any planes from west of the Miss. Their working dates were from 1838-49
and were hardware dealers in St. Louis after that. This one has an unusual
cut which looks like a table joint to me. It is uncleaned, but will look great
with just a light cleaning, but I will leave that to your tastes. The makers
mark is clear and strong and the cutter and wedge are nice.
Good. . . . . . SOLD
P Sargent Concord New Hampshire
1" Boxed Bead This plane is 9.5" long, and is made of beech..
Everything is here and proper, and the condition is very nice overall.
Good. . . . . SOLD
Rosewood
& Boxwood Plow Plane
This is a nice looking plow plane with great contrasts between the different
exotic woods used. It is unmarked as to maker, which is odd it is
such a nicely done piece.
Good+ . . . . . .
SOLD!
D. Amsden Tongue Plane
This plane is made of beech.. Everything is here and as can be seen
it has been slightly modified to cut a smaller tongue. The condition is OK
overall on this early plane by a hard to find maker. Note the nice shape of the
primitive sleeper style wedge.
Good. . . . . SOLD
B. Frogatt
This molding plane is 9 3/4" long. The makers mark is not listed in Pollack's
last book, and so it may be English. It has those characteristics that could
make it either American, or English. It appears to be made of Beech, but the
wedge profile and the extra 1/4" in length give one pause. It has a complex
stepped profile that is not very deep. All in all a nice example.
Good. . . . . . SOLD
