Carbide Lamp Collection Here is an interesting grouping of mining related
Carbide Lights and a couple other mining related lights for use in mines back near
the turn of the century. The two "Davey" style lamps are included in this
collection because they are the only ones I have ever bought that I felt were early
enough or different enough from the standard ones that I always see available.
I have split the mining related collections into 4 distinct groups to keep buying
these groups more manageable. There are significant discounts offered for
quantity purchases of these different groupings, and premiums to be paid if there
is just one item that you want to buy out of the group. The different groupings
will include the Oil wicks, my Carbide Lamps and other lighting devices, the Candlestick
selection I have gathered over the years, and finally the dynamite cap tins that
I have available. I do have a couple Dynamite boxes listed for sale back on
the main site at the Misc. Category Page found here as well as a few pairs of dynamite
related pliers . I am looking to sell each of these groupings as a whole instead
of going through the trouble of finding individual buyers for each object.
I believe that I have them priced attractively enough to make this happen.
We shall see.......

Hansen "Force Feed" Carbide Mining Lamp
This Hansen Mfg. Co. of Chicago Ill. Miners Carbide Lamp is a very hard to find carbide miners light / lamp.
It will make for a great addition to the mine light display or mining collection.
A fellow named Augie
Hansen was the designer / maker of this
unusual carbide mining lamp. He began his career working for the Justrite
mining light company and left their employ to strike out on his own during
the early teens. He held a number of different patents related to
carbide lamps and mine lighting and was working toward producing the best
design possible but did not foresee other developments in mine lighting that
brought an end to the endeavor. He produced a few different designs of
lamps as he was improving and refining his basic design. All in limited numbers. This
model is I believe one of the later ones and includes a very well designed reflector bracket
system, an unusual built in striker design, as well as the distinguishing
raised basket weave design of the base canister.
This style lamp was produced for a very short
period, and is in excellent top shelf un-cleaned collector condition.
There is no major damage or dents and everything appears to be operable and correct. I
see no cracks or
other damage.

George
Stephenson
"Geordie" Safety Lamp / Mining Light The
only marking on this unusual mining lamp is J C B in a triangle on the lip
by the top bonnet. I could find no reference to that in Pohs book. Inside the base it is stamped with the number 11
on two parts. I believe this to be a George Stephenson design miners safety lamp
from the mid 19th century. It
is a design that was first developed in the early 19th century by George Stephenson
who is also famous for his work involving Steam trains or locomotives.
George Stephenson is one of the 3 big names in the early development of
miners safety lamps along with Davy and Clanny.
It seems all three were
working to find a solution to the problem of explosive gases found in mines
and mining lights that could ignite those gases with open flames used
in other designs like candles, oil wick mine lights or other mine lighting designs.
Stephenson's idea did not gain as widespread acceptance or use as Davy's
idea, and are
considered rarer than more commonly found makes or designs. In his book Henry Pohs devotes an entire chapter to
Stephenson and this style lamp but never pictures this exact one, or shows a
good pic of the inner workings. I could not find any examples of this lamp
at some of the internet sites dealing with safety lamps either.
I am no expert, but
my understanding of the the
idea that is different from the Davy or Clanny designs is the way the
design allowed air to pass through the upper / inner housing inside the gauze / wire
mesh. (see pic showing inside of base). Pohs also makes reference to the
closed
bonnet design being different. These design ideas were such that the
flame inside the lamp was protected in such a way as to not allow it to
ignite the gaseous air outside the gauze / wire enclosure. Inside
there is a copper or brass tube with perforations that can slide up and
down. i have been told that there is a missing glass tube that this
would fit on. I do not know. A rare and early mining / safety lamp in
very nice condition. Ready for the mine light collection
and display.

the base. The overall condition of this mining light is very
good. The glass is good, and it seems to be operable. It stands
approx 10" tall This early Hughes Brothers of PA mining light / safety lamp has been cleaned

Hughes
Brothers Scranton PA Miniature "Vest Pocket"
Safety Lamp This
miniature Hughes Brothers style safety lamp is commonly referred to as the
"vest pocket" model. Some people have called them salesman samples as
well. The dia. of the base is just 1 1/2" and it stands approx 4"
tall. ( See the last pic to see it next to a regular size lamp.) The base on this lamp is clearly marked with the Hughes Brothers name and
Scranton PA location as can be
seen in the pics. The overall condition is second to none.
This is one of
the rarest and hardest to find of all safety lamps, large or small.
The Pohs book has pictures of a few similar sized lamps from the Tony Moon collection, but this
exact style or type is not pictured. . A similar lamp can be seen on a website
about safety lamps but that one is unmarked with the maker or location name.
That
example is said to have originated from Larry Clicks collection.
Those were the only ones I could find reference to on the internet or in the
references I have..
A opportunity that only
presents itself occasionally. Highly recommended!!
Excellent . . . . .$
