Miner's
Oil Wick Lighting Devices These mining related lighting
devices were used in mines before the advent or introduction of carbide lamps and
then the electrical lighting that came after. Prior to the introduction of
these oil wicks, mines were mostly lit by candle light held in what are known as
miner's candlesticks or "sticking tommies". We live right in the heart of
California gold mining country, and at times the small towns that dot the Sierra
Foothills all around this area had populations of tens of thousands during their
heyday, only to be deserted and left nearly empty a short period later when the
gold ran out. Given that, one might assume or expect there to be more artifacts
related to this Gold Rush era to be found here, but that is not the case and in
general this area has pretty much been sucked dry of most pieces related to its
early mining history. The majority of the mining related artifacts that we
have in our collection, a portion of which we are offering for sale here, were found
in the southern part of the Midwest, near the coal mines there, or on the East Coast.
This collection of oil wicks are all in very good condition. Most are marked
with some sort of manufacturer's ID. The variations that can be found included
ones made of copper, brass, and cast iron in addition to steel / tin. Some
have patented features to allow for air flow or for cleaning, etc. There
are hundreds of variations available so this collection is by no means complete,
but is a very good start or addition.

Candlestick w/ File Work Decorative Pick / Tool in Handle

This unusual mining / miner's high grader candlestick is in nice condition and has good

that miners would hide small gold nuggets held in place w/ mud, in the space
provided in the hollowed out handle. Note how the tapered shaft /

Miners Candlesticks / Sticking Tommies The
top one is a pretty common form, but it is clearly stamped / marked Washington
on the bar. I read in a guide for these that this was for a mine
in CA. and that this is a pretty rare variation.
The second
one is a twisted or coiled wire version candlestick. I believe it is
a manufactured piece. It is a bit rough. Both of these have been in a
collection in WA. for a number of years.

J.
L. Rickard 1881 Patent Model Miners / Mining
Combination Dinner Pail / Lantern / Warmer
The patent for this unusual mining artifact was granted to J. L.
Rickard of Salem, Ohio in Columbiana County on August 9th 1881. The
condition is superb and all original. The Patent # is 245402 and it
comes up w/ a Google Search. It has the original patent tags, and Mr.
Rickard's advertising plaque on the front.
The Patent Model has all moving parts like a full size example lunch pail
would have. There is a cup, the lid for the lunch pail, a flask and
its cap, the warming burner / lantern inside the body, and the body itself.
There are a few different versions of combination lighted miners lunch
/ dinner pails known. A
couple of different ones are pictured in Pohs work on mining lights. He
states that they are very rare. I had a full size version
of one years back that can be viewed in the archives of
www.AntiqBuyer.com. That ad tells of the patents for that one and
another I found when researching that one. This patent model is different from any of those known or shown.
No examples or info on full size ones come up consulting with Google.
By law, patent models
could be no larger than 12" in any dimension. This model is
about half that size, and so about half the size of a normal miners lunch pail.
That it is smaller than what a full size version would be
adds to the charm and rarity, seeing that Richard could have submitted a full
size one for his patent application. Remember, it being a Patent Model there are
no others of it out there. Numerous Google searches turned up no full
size examples or information, so it may have never gone into production and there
may be no full size examples to be found. Opportunity!! Fine . . . . . $1795.00
SOLD!!
Miners
Lunch Pail w/ Built in Heater Light This is a
rare mining or Miner's lunch pail that has a built in oil wick light to not only
light the way, but to also help keep the miners lunch warm. I have
only seen a couple of these in 25 years of looking. There are a couple of
other designs that are similar pictured in Pohs book on mine lighting.
Good . . . . .$295.00 SOLD!
Patented 1871
& 1877
Miners Dinner / Lunch Pail w/ built in Lantern / Warmer
This is a rare and unusual miner's dinner / lunch pail
/ bucket
with a built in lantern that also acts as a warmer for the food and / or drink
stored inside. It has a very interesting and ingenious venting system
to move hot air around inside to accomplish the warming tasks and allow the wicks to
get enough air. There are two patents stamped into the top. One
is readable with a patent date of December 18th 1877.
The 1877 patent was granted to Joseph Haight of Port Chester New York and
the # is 198,294. There is a second earlier patent date of 1871 but it is hard to
make out. There was a similar lighted dinner pail patented on
October 31st 1871 by the brothers Horace & Willie Ketcham of New Jersey.
That patent # is 120,442 and it shows in Google's collection of patents.
All of the parts are original including the lamp inside.
The upper portion removes and is for the liquid part of the meal. This
piece can oriented when put in place so that the heat will warm the bottom
directly or not. The patent says it should be oriented a certain way
when empty so as to not melt the solder joints.. The cup is
original and, there is a hooded vent in the top to allow the gases to escape. The dinner
or meal portion
is stored in a separate container that you pull out of the bottom after
releasing a spring catch there.
When I sold this a number of years ago to a collector it had remains
of original black paint on the exterior as well as a couple of dents. (see
listing above) It has since had a careful and nicely done
restoration which included pushing out a dent or two, and repainting it.
It look great now. Pohs book pictures a couple variations of this
style mining light or lantern / dinner / lunch pail and refers to them as being the rare of the rare.
A rare opportunity.

Miners Lunch Pails These miners lunch
pails are both in pretty nice condition and make for a nice display.
They illustrate how miners or other workers of yesteryear dealt with
lunch period. I will bet it was not an hour, and that there were no
martinis stashed in the top. What life was like for the common guy
before fast food became the norm.
