Small Franklin Bipolar Electric Motor
This small Franklin toy size battery powered electric motor runs. It is
built on the same frame and principle as the small toy Bipolar Edison Motor one
sees from time to time. It have been suggested that they were sold or given
away at one of the expos or fairs around the country that took place after the
introduction by Edison of his light bulbs and full size motors / dynamos. You
actually see more of the Edison branded motor than you do the Franklin. This
tiny motor stands just under 4" tall and has a great look with its double column
exposed windings. It will display nicely and will be a nice addition to the
antique electric, motor, Americana, or other collection.

Porter No. 3
Bi-Polar Electric Motor by Kendrick & Davis of Lebanon N. H.
This
small early bi-polar motor dates from near the turn of the century or a few
years before. It is in great cosmetic condition, but one of the
original copper brushes is missing. I tried to get it running with a
made up brush and it tried to go but just in spurts. I see no burned
areas or anything like that and so I left it. Kendrick & Davis of Lebanon N. H.
offered this style motor in several different sizes. Later examples
are typically marked K & D w/o the name and location spelled out. The
larger models like this are hard
to find. I have seen these motors with small fan blades mounted on them and this
one at about 6" tall
would be a good candidate for that application.
Good + . . . . . $395.00 SOLD!!
Antique Bi Polar / Open Frame Electric Motor
There is no tag or maker id info on this early and interesting
open frame exposed coil electric motor. The original wooden base
measures just about 12" long. It is set up
to use carbon brushes, and although both holders are present one carbon brush is
missing. I assume the handle on the right side is a speed adjuster /
controller.
The wooden pulley on the left is grooved as though it could be used to drive not
just small flat belt machines but things like sewing machines or
other round belt machines as well. Nice.Good + . . . . . $395.00
Roth Bros & Co. 1/4 Horsepower
Bi-Polar Electric Motor The overall cosmetic condition
of this 19th century bi-polar electric motor / dynamo is very nice. This
early c. 1890 1/4 horsepower antique electric motor is large, and heavy
weighing nearly 75 pounds. From an era when 1/4 horsepower meant
something. There is no blade or cage indicating it was a fan, just the flat
belt brass pulley seen. It is larger than the bi-polar fan motors I have
seen by this outfit but at 1/4 horsepower who knows.
The cast iron base measures approx. 9" wide by 6" deep. The motor stands just about 12" tall. It is fresh from an estate
here in CA although the owner said he brought it here from IN and that it
had been in his family from the beginning. The cast brass tag on the front says
"Manufactured by Roth Bros & Co. Chicago Ill USA 2865". The info/
spec tag says Volts 220, H. P. 1/4, Speed 1900, Amp 000. The wooden terminal block on the top was glued along a crack and is now solid and nice. The brushes are
two sets of dual carbon rods, and look good. I see no damage or problems and was told it ran just fine by the owner.
It has not been tested and is being sold as is.
This is a Very Rare & Nice looking open frame bi-polar antique electric motor. Perfect for the early electric motor / dynamo or other
electrical related collection!!

C
& C / Curtis & Crocker Bi Polar / Open Frame Electric Motor
This c. 1890 C & C / Crocker & Curtis 1/4 Horse Bi-Polar Electric Motor is in excellent condition and does run. The Crocker and Curtis Electric Motor Co was formed
as a partnership between Charles G. Curtis and Francis B. Crocker
sometime before 1886. That partnership ended about 1892 with both
parties going their own ways and forming new electrical related companies. Curtis formed the Curtis Electric Mfg. Co,
and Crocker formed a new partnership with Wheeler called the Crocker Wheeler
Electric Co.
This
C & C / Crocker & Curtis motor is a very early and important find. The motor is mounted on a cast iron 3 leg paw or
claw foot base which is similar to those seen on rare and desirable C & C electric
fans. Those fans are considered the first commercially produced non
battery electric fans offered. The motor has been lightly cleaned
needing just the brushes worked on to get it running. I have provided numerous pics, but if you
need more or better ones, or more info, contact me.
The motor weighs approx. 70 lbs. It stands 14"
tall and is 10" across the coils. The measurement from the base to the
center of the shaft is approx. 10". It measures 16" or so from end to
end of the shafts. The measurement across the paw feet at the bottom is 12".
The cast tag has 4 different patents listed from between 1886 & 1890.
The serial # is 9444. This motor is currently set up
with a flat belt pulley on one end, and a grooved pulley for a round belt on the other.
While it seems a bit large for a fan, I imagine an enterprising
and imaginative early electric fan aficionado could easily enough produce a large
and unique industrial
size C & C fan from this. Wouldn't that be impressive looking?

Thomas
A. Edison 1882 type "Z" # 295 "Mary Ann" Dynamo / Electric Generator
Thomas Edison's type "Z" dynamo of 1882 was known as
"Long Legged or Long Waisted Mary Ann" by the Edison staff. This
Edison Dynamo is probably the finest
original condition example of this RARE and desirable Edison machine known.
There are just minor losses to it's original paint and it is in fine overall
condition! All other aspects are in fine original condition including the
windings and controls. There are no casting problems or cracks.
A truly superb example!!
Research has shown that this early electrical machine was made at the
Edison machine works in New York city in 1882. There were only 400 made
(age & number confirmed by Dr. Paul Israel of Rutgers University) and
just a handful have survived. The Henry ford museum in MI. stated that
they had never seen one with original paint and Hal Wallace of the
Smithsonian agrees. In correspondence he said that theirs, which is on
display, is a repaint! This Edison "Mary Ann" stands just under 6' tall
& weighs over 1000 pounds.
Picture this rare and commanding piece of
electrical history in the lobby of your corporate
headquarters, or just inside the doors of the museum devoted to antique
electrical devices you are creating.
This rare and desirable piece deserves a special place to be admired
and cherished for the importance it has in relation to the development and
history of electrical power in America. To just call
this early and rare Antique Edison Dynamo rare would be an understatement. Opportunity!!

1/4 H.P. Bipolar Electric Motor
This 1/6 H.P. motor appears to be in fine condition noting the minor tears in the
armatures fabric or tape / paper cover. The windings inside appear to be fine.
These smaller versions of these early electric motors are even harder to find than
their larger brothers. The top brass plate on this one has one patent date
from 1891, and it says it is a 3Amp. 10 Volt that runs at 1300 RPM. The serial
# is 12442. The quadruple brushes are carbon in three of the holders and the
fourth seems to have leather in it for some reason. I would imagine that this
would run all day, and have no trouble putting any current product to shame.
It is just about 8 3/4" tall and 12" long. There are not many of these
left and they make for a graphic display and represent an important part in the
history of the development of electrical technology in this countries history.
Rare and recommended!

about 3" square at the base and standing about 6" tall. It would look neat with a small fan blade on it, but I think these were for demonstration or to power small
toys like workshops or erector set like toys. Straight off the shelf in the old storage building . I hooked it up to 6 volts and not much happened.
Not sure why as the windings look OK.

Bipolar Electric Motor
The condition on this motor is second to none, and it has not been restored
or fiddled with in any way. The patent dates for this motor are from the
1880's putting it as one of the earliest. This company is well known and
were highly respected when they were in business for just a few years in the
1880's. In addition to fans they also made motors for commercial purposes
and I assume that this is what this was for to run a sewing machine or other
similar device. Seldom seen, and never in this condition.

Miniature
Edison Electric Motor / Dynamo / Generator I have seen a couple
of these over the years, and the same design with the name Franklin leading one
to believe they were something offered up at an exposition or fair or something
like that It probably dates from the 1870's -1890's and is a pretty rare piece.

1/2
Horsepower Emerson Electric Motor This early
motor was found running a foot powered Barnes Lathe. It has a great design
and will probably run for another 100 years. It weighs 80 lbs at a
minimum.
Good . . . . . .$395.00 SOLD
Emerson
1/4 Horse Power Electric Motor I believe this dates from just after
the turn of the century. From a time when the rating of a motor meant
something, and its weight probably directly
proportional to its power and the horses weight as well. This thing
weighs close to 80lbs and looks like it would run all day long. The
switch on this antique electric motor looks to be an aftermarket kill
switch. It has a great look, and runs like top.
Good . . . . .$350.00 SOLD!!
Toy
Electric Motor These came in different sizes. The base seems to be marked
110Volts, but I am not sure if that is correct. Unlike the other motors
these used electro magnetic field to operate. It looks similar to a Weeden
design, but there is no makers info to be found.
Good + . . . . .$150.00 SOLD!

SO-EZ Electric Sewing Machine Motor w/ Rheostat by Hamilton Beach
This
set-up reminds me of the situation I am in where I am being sent a black box to make it possible to receive TV signals after they change them to all digital.
Electricity had come to America, but what was the housewife to do with her trusty hand crank
or treadle sewing machine. Upgrade of course. These small electric motors
with a foot powered rheostat were offered to the consumer
who had a treadle or hand crank sewing machines and had invested a lot of money in
them and would not buy one of the new fangled electric models.
I had one of these once that was patented in the 1880's and bolted to the
machine instead of the wheel and crank. That was a quite rare little piece.
This later model is more universal and has a rubber pulley that would run
against the sewing machine wheel to get things going. From the looks of it
and the condition the wife decided to stick with hand or foot power, or
hubby got her one of those real electrics the next year. Overall it is in
great condition, and I suspect the wife just continued to treadle away and
this sat in the closet for the last 80 + years or so.
Excellent . . . . . $95.00 SOLD!!
Carlisle
& Finch Water Powered 12 Volt Electric Bipolar Dynamo / Motor This water powered dynamo has a great look to it.
Carlisle Finch is best known for their line of early electric toy trains. They are also well known for their bipolar electric motors, dynamos and other electrical devices.
The cast iron housing for the water wheel carries the name Carlisle Finch and the PA location.
Information found on the internet says that this style and size
dynamo was meant to fill a need found amongst their customer base who were buying their line of toy electric trains but had no feasible way to run them.
Remember, this dynamo dates from the 1890's or so. The story goes that these dynamos were meant to be run off the, at that time nearly free source of potential
power, water, that most every home did have at that time to power their electric train. Examples of this style dynamo
running can be found on You-Tube.
This example does have a bit of
an issue. The water wheel or impeller inside the cast iron housing is gone.
I believe these were a pretty simple design made of brass. It would be 5"
dia. or less. I am in the process of locating one so that I can have a new one cast. I
would imagine it is a pretty simple vane affair like a turgo style waterwheel,
or a single cup wheel design as opposed to a more elegant design like a Pelton water wheel that had double cups. Good . . . . . $750.00
