this slug heated combination iron, and this example is in outstanding
condition. While the body is turns up from time
to time, it is almost never seen with the auxiliary roller fluter that attaches to the
same handle that fits the iron. All of the different parts could be
bought separately, explaining why just the iron is found more often. Note
in the last photo how the fluter plate fits on top of the iron body.
Very hard to find!!
Very Good . . . . . . $1095.00
SOLD!
Patent 1876 Revolving Combination Slug / Fluting Iron
This is a rare revolving box iron designed with a fluter plate on the
side. It's one of the earliest irons of this style. With an 1876 patent
date it was manufactured 20 years prior to the Horace Carver revolving
combination irons that would follow. This iron can be found in a few
variations as the inventor made small design changes trying to get it just
right. This example is very nice with no condition issues and complete with slug and pin. Be sure to look at all the pictures to see
close-ups of
the fluter plate and patent marking. The condition is
very nice! A top shelf piece!
Good + . . . . . . SOLD!
"Little Giant" Patented Fluting Iron / Sad Iron &

fluting plates. The latch and hinge are good. Nice!

Myers'
Patent Combination Fluter / Smooth Iron
Mr. Frederick Myers pulled several patents over the years for
different designs and styles of fluting irons. One was the famous goat
fluter.
Another was for the model similar to this that came with patterned embossing plates. This one's plates
are made to slide in and out as if to allow for different size plates to be used.
The clip, a nicely made replacement, removes so you can use the top as the rocker.
Very Good. . . . . . SOLD!
Patented
Combination Charcoal / Fluting Iron With
its built-in design there is no excuse for ever misplacing the rocker on
this combo iron. Very Good . . . . . . $95.00

Monroe
Patent
Combination Fluting / Sad Iron The
bottom is a little rough but could clean up to be nicer. No issues
with the hinge or latch. The fluting plates are iron.
Good . . . . . . $95.00

Carver
Patent Revolving Box Iron Horace Carver of Racine, WI patented a number of different box irons of a
similar design. All were double pointed and had a trap door on the
side that opened to allow for the insertion of a heating slug. Banking
on the theory that heat rises the idea was that once the bottom side started
to cool you would rotate the iron 180 degrees to continue ironing with the
opposite, presumably hotter, side. But Carver went a step further and
designed the edge of his irons with a secondary feature to allow for fluting
or polishing. This particular model features a polisher surface by
incorporating a raised panel with a
dotted design pattern, similar to that used on the bottom of the Mahoney
polisher. They say that imitation is the highest form of flattery, but
in this case I'm not sure who was flattering who. This Carver is marked "Pat.
Applied For" on the inside of the door, which is decorated with a
pretty geometric design. It is missing the slug but in
otherwise fine conditon with no handle, latch, or hinge issues!!
Very Good . . . . . . $345.00
SOLD!
Acme
Carbon Iron - Combination Charcoal Iron / Fluting Iron
Cutting edge clean coal technology patented in 1910.
The secret was to cut off the chimney and stop calling what it burned "coal"
and call it carbon instead. I have heard this is one of the models
Donald is going to reintroduce as part of his program to create new jobs.
Forget solar and wind---get yours here first. Super condition!!
Very Good . . . . . . $95.00 SOLD!
Sensible
Combo Fluter / Flat Iron This combination iron is
a NY patent iron by Nelson Streeter. The Sensible iron base is the holder
for the roller fluter plate. This is a great iron that has a
great look. There is also a miniature version of this iron that is very rare,
and Streeter also patented the Magic #1 box iron, a variation on the theme of
this one. Very Good

Streeter's
Magic No. 1 Combination Box Iron / Fluting Iron
Nelson Streeter of Groton, NY was one of
the more prolific manufacturers of his day, producing a host of ironing devices
including removable handle sad irons, sleeve irons, child-size irons, and an
assortment of combination flat / fluting irons. The Magic No. 1
is certainly one of his best looking and interesting creations! This box
iron is complete with its heating slug. When the flatwork and smoothing
was done, the ironer could then get on to the more challenging chore of fluting
by simply removing the handle / top assembly and laying the specially fitted
fluter plate onto the iron base. The slug would continue to provide the
heat needed to roll the ruffle into the dampened and starched fabric.
When the fluting was done, or when the slug needed to be reheated, she could
easily use the flange at the end of of the roller handle to safely pick up the
fluter plate to remove it for later use, and to remove the slug from the body
of the iron. It was all very well thought out. As can be imagined
with so many parts and pieces these irons are most often found incomplete.
This example is in very good condition with lots of nickel plating remaining
on the body, the fluter plate, and the roller and with original black japanning
on the top and on the handle of the roller. The wood handle and the latch
are also in excellent condition. This is another iron that doesn't come
along every week!
Good . . . . . SOLD!
Mann's
Patent Revolving Fluting / Flat Combination Iron
At
first glance this iron appears to be remarkably similar to the John
Hewitt patent revolving combination fluter / flatiron. However
instead of a separate removable fluter plate that is the hallmark of the
Hewitt iron, the Mann patent iron is designed with a
"built-in" fluted bottom. A close inspection of the
construction of the body reveals it was actually cast as two individual
pieces and then permanently pinned together as one. The body is
stamped "Mann's Pat. Oct. 8, '72" and the patent indicates it
was meant to be a fluter, a flat iron and a polisher, depending on which
of the four sides were used. Though both Hewitt and Mann
apparently lived and worked in Pittsburgh, PA during the same time Mr.
Hewitt was no doubt the more financially successful of the two, given
that Hewitt's combination iron is by far more frequently found than this
model of Mr. Mann's. This iron is from the longtime Glissman
collection.
Good . . . . . SOLD!
The
Acme Carbon Combination Iron This charcoal heated combination flat iron
and fluter is seldom found complete with both its fluting side plate and accessory
rocker. Purchased from a long-time collector, this example is just about as
nice as they get! If you have never seen one of these irons firsthand, you
will be impressed with the manufacturer's workmanship and attention to detail.
The Acme name and patent date of Mar. 15, 1910 are boldly cast into the top of the
iron. The top, which releases at the back by means of a revolving latch, lifts
off to reveal a unique 2-prong hold down at the front. The back vent
on the base is a circular affair with a design that incorporates a little cup to
catch any stray ashes when its in the open position. This hard-to-find
combination iron is in super nice condition!
Good . . . . . SOLD!
Patented
1872 Combination Fluting Iron / Flat Iron This is one of those irons that
must have come from a small hoard of never-been-used new-old-stock ones some
years back. It is mint!
Good . . . . . SOLD!
Streeter's
Magic Combination Fluter / Smooth Iron One
of the rarer combination irons Streeter put out. There is a broken tab
on the rear of the body, but the handle still latches on securely.

Dean's
Patent Combination Fluter / Smooth Iron The
Dean Patent was a competitor of the Sensible and Magic offered by Streetor.
This often is commonly seen as just the box iron with none of the
accessories. This one is complete with the proper trivet, fluter
plate, and roller fluter. Seldom seen! .

Patented 1882 Fox Revolving Iron
This patented alcohol fueled revolving combination iron looks to be
unfired. The patent info on the front is from October 3rd 1882.
The number is 265401, and this is a close representation to the patent
drawing, noting that the
fuel tank is a bit different from the one shown. Having just a single patent date would make
this a first model, as there are other patents taken out for this iron by Mr.
Fox. This iron is described in the Berney book, but not
pictured. She found ads describing its features, including using it as
a stove and heater in the sickroom. It is unusual in that all four
sides could be used or had a distinct purpose as well.
There are
apparently two later patents for minor improvements to the design. I am not
sure if there are examples of irons with those improvements out there. This is a
rare iron that we have only had one time before, and that one came in the Glissman collection. The latch is
good, and so are the
hinges. There is one small ding in the tank. The condition is
otherwise near mint. Very nice!
Good + . . . . . . SOLD!
Mann's Patent Combination Revolving Fluting Iron / Sad Iron / Polishing Iron
Similar to a Hewitt, but the ribbed fluting plate is fixed and permanent
rather than removable like the Hewitt.
And much harder to find---a very unusual combination fluter / sad iron. Nice!
Good + . . . . . . SOLD!
"The Economist' Patented Revolving Combination Iron
One of several Carver patent revolving combination slug irons.
This one is a flatiron and a polisher. It's complete with the slug.
