Special Note Concerning
Iron Prices: Sad Irons / Pressing Irons Prices are evolving:
After 20 years of steady increases in values,
which culminated in a bubble burst, iron prices have now settled back to levels of the past.
Prices seen reflect actual recent sale results from this website or a general price that is more in line w/ today's market.
Irons
pictured without prices represent earlier sales whose sale results are outdated and do not accurately reflect current market values.
Ebay results closely reflect current market values for many sad irons. Check eBay completed / SOLD results to see current values for
many antique irons.

4 Hatters / Hat Makers
Shackle & Brim Irons
These are known as moveable front shackle
irons. They were used for forming and smoothing the brim on hats of all
different styles ranging from cowboy and western hats to ladies hats and fedoras.
They came in a wide range of sizes and styles. Some are marked with the makers
name and size, and most were not. They would be heated on
an auxiliary heater and are oftentimes found w/ burned handles from heating them
in this manner.

Group 7 Hatters / Hat Making
Removable Handle Brim Irons These 3 hat
making irons are rare and hard to find vintage hat irons. The two
on the left have removable handles that resemble Sensible style handles, but I
am not sure that is who made them. Over the years I have had
hundreds of other brim or shackle irons, but only 2 or three of this style. The one on the right has a swinging adjustable feature controlled by a part of
the handle to allow the user to have more control when forming the brim.
It too is an unusual and hard to find style.

so forth.

Tolliker Irons I am not sure where the name
originates from but that is what this style iron is called. They are used
to smooth out the area where brim meets body or other curved areas. They
are typically crescent shaped and can be different radius, heights, lengths and
so forth.

Group 10 Hatters / Hat Making
Tolliker Irons Each of these is different
from each other, and from the ones above. That is really
pretty interesting, to think that there were that many different makers, making
totally different irons to basically accomplish the same task. Big or
small, tall or low, straight or leaning, w/ flange without, and on and on.

Group 11 Rare Hatters / Hat Making
Irons
On the
left is a rare shaped Hatters Brim Iron that was at one time a slug iron.
It would be the first of this design I have ever seen meant to
take a slug.
The last user got tired of keeping track of the slugs, or lost it, and filled the
cavity with lead. The lead expanded as it
cooled and did crack the iron iron in several places. The rear door is
still present. It is solid as a
rock though. Very Unusual!!!
On the right is an electric
adjustable
shackle brim iron.
I have never seen an electric moveable shackle hat iron before. Think of
the quality of the work it could produce being a constant even
temperature as you were forming and smoothing the brim of you
latest creation. I wonder how well the new all wood
examples I saw on the internet would work with no heat at all.
Not too well I imagine as you can no longer order them.
