American
Girl Toy Sewing Machine / TSM in Mission Oak Style Treadle Stand
This style TSM with treadle base dates from the correct period, being the
1920s or so. The base can also be found with Stitchwell machine or the
many other names that machine can be found with. It is in very nice
overall condition.
Very nice!! Fine . . . . . . . $895.00 SOLD!!
Grain Toy Sewing Machine / TSM in Unusual
Consul / Console Cabinet This
is a rare variation of a small antique English made cast iron toy sewing machine. The condition is excellent and it is
all original. While typical Grain TSM's are pretty common, only a
handful of this variation in the consul or console table with extension side
table tops have ever turned
up. It is one we have never had before nor have we seen one in some of the major
collections we have viewed.
Different, RARE, and very nice!!
Fine . . . . . . . $595.00
SOLD!!
Cupid
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine There are about
a dozen variations or different toy treadle sewing machines, both American and
European that can be found. All are pretty rare and were only made in
small numbers. The American made Cupid ranks right up there with the
hardest to find from any location.
This example is in super condition.
The decals are some of the best and brightest and most detailed that can be found on any toy
treadle sewing machine. The maker was the Cupid Mfg. Co. and was based
in Chicago. From the look and style I assume these are from
shortly after the turn of the century. Glenda Thomas shows several in her
second book from some large collections, none with as nice decals as this
and has a bit more info on the company and some of their advertising.
A
very nice example that will be sure to be a highlight of any collection.
Good + . . . . . $3250.00 SOLD!!!
Eldredgette Child-Size Antique Toy Treadle Sewing Machine
This small toy treadle sewing machine was produced by the
National Sewing Machine Co. of Belvedere IL. They were the outfit that also made the
line of cast iron machines named Stitchwell that can be found. These
machines date from just after WWI and into the 20's. I assume it was
the Great Depression that put an end to their manufacture.
Both
the Stitchwell, and the Eldredgette are found on this Mission Oak style
wood stand. I assume that you can also find other similar machines by this
same firm, like the Wee, American Girl, and all the other Stitchwell look
a-likes that are around but I have never seen or had any of these.
The condition of the machine is very nice. The name decal is super and
the paint has just a few minor chips. The top has a ruler decal on the
front edge and this shows some wear, so we know that this was a played with
and loved toy. A nice example of a hard to find sewing machine, in
nice condition. Good + . . . . . $1250.00 SOLD!!!
Ideal Child-Size Antique Toy Treadle Sewing Machine
The "Ideal Toy Treadle Sewing Machine is a very nice
piece of 19th century Americana.
In Glenda Thomas's first book on toy
and miniature sewing machines she has one pictured and has a lot of info
about the two different manufacturers having made these. Her
research also reveals that well known
outfits like Marshall Fields of Chicago were distributers. The ads
she cites are from the late 1890's and include one from the Youths
Companion, and the Ladies Home Journal. She even pictures one of these
ads in the back of the book and it shows that this machine sold for the
whopping sum of $5.00 when it was first offered.
The condition is
very nice. There is not a lot of decoration, but there never was.
This machine was marketed as not just a toy to be played with, but also a a
machine to be used by not only the child, but the mom, or even the servant.
It was a very utilitarian machine and offered that way. The stand is very nicely done, with
the name Ideal in cast out or cut out letters like one finds in certain wrenches or
other pieces of decorative cast iron from this era. The treadle is especially well done and
rivals those in detail and finish found on real treadles from this era.
Good + . . . . . $1850.00 SOLD!!!
Ruth
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM The Ruth
TSM is German made, and hard enough to find in its own right. We have never
had it before as a treadle. The treadle base here looks to be a craftsman
made affair. There is a Ruth treadle machine with a similar base that is
presented as original shown in the Thomas' book on page 15. I believe that
this is a well done copy of that, but it too might be original. It is very
nicely done.
The condition of the machine is very nice with nearly
100% of the original paint and decal decorations remaining. It is set up
for a smaller child than the others on this page and only stands a bit over
2 feet tall. A wonderful little machine / treadle toy that will display
very nicely!
Good + . . . . . $450.00 SOLD!!!
"Princess"
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM There
is info about this machine cast into the sides of the stand and stamped
into the stitch plate. It is by the Decker Mfg. Co. Ltd of Detroit,
Mich. It is very similar in look and design to the Ideal treadle, and
the Little Tot toy treadles that we have had and sold in the past.
The
makers of these toy treadles went the extra mile for the most part making
toy treadles to look and act just like Mom's treadle, just scaled down a bit
to fit the smaller user. This one even has a provision for the base to be
adjustable for different size or growing little girls as the pedal portion
can be raised or lowered. Note also that the main parts are all cast, and
that the push rods and lever arms are not stamped metal as found on most
lesser toys from the same era.
The condition of this example is very
nice. It looks like the base may have been repainted, but I see no signs of
repairs. The head is very nice with 90% or more of the original paint and
decoration.
Good + . . . . . $2750.00 SOLD!!!
Cupid Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM There are about a dozen variations
of different toy treadle sewing machines, both American and European that

Muller
18
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM w/ Dome Top
The head of this child size treadle sewing machine looks like and is the
same size as a Muller #12 sewing machine, but the solid cast iron base of the machine is quite
different and when found on a treadle stand this machine becomes a #18 according to the
references I have.
The condition is super. The protective
decorated tin dome top shown in the other pictures did a great job of protecting the original
finish and decorations on the machine. They are near perfect. There are no cracks or repairs,
and the pedal has the proper M cast into it. It operates smoothly.
Some special little girl must have been very happy and loved this when given it the first time
close to 100 years ago on a special occasion. It will look great as a
display piece and will be a highlight of most any collection of children's
toys or sewing machines. A rare opportunity!
Good + . . . . . $2750.00 SOLD!!!
"Busy Bee" Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM
This style child size toy treadle sewing machine could be referred to
as Mission or Arts and Crafts style with its distinctive wood base made in that classic style.
These machines date from near the 1920's which is the correct era for that
style base. These wooden treadle stands can be found with
several other heads on them besides those of the Stitchwell family which
were made by the National Sewing Machine Co. of Belvedere, IL. For instance you
can also find the American Girl TSM, the Eldredgette and the Damascus on
similar stands, each
of which were also made by
National.
We have an F & W Automatic on this same style base as well.
It looks proper, and perhaps that can be explained as both companies were
based in the same area of the country and used the same manufacturer, or
perhaps that the bases were offered as an accessory to fit other model machines by the maker. I do not know for sure.
The condition of this example is very nice.
They are getting hard to find, and make for a great accent piece and display
nicely in a number of settings.
Good + . . . . . $850.00 SOLD!!!
F & W Automatic
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM We have
had a number of the F & W Automatic sewing machines over the years. These
sewing machines
were produced by Foley & Williams, an outfit that hailed from Chicago,
IL.
These sewing machines were offered for a
considerable sum of money compared to other small machines from the same
era and are oftentimes found in their original boxes with pricing info stenciled onto the box. All that I can remember have the
grooved wheel provision to allow it to be set up as a treadle, but this is
the first one actually set up as a treadle that I have run across. The
treadle base is essentially the same as the one under the Stitchwell / Busy
Bee I have listed above.
The condition of this toy treadle
sewing machine is very nice. It is much more substantially made than the typical toy sewing machine from this era, and
I
am sure that explains why it was offered for more. Note that the sewing
arms are made of cast iron as opposed to just flat steel stock like that
which is found on
most other toys from this era. The paint and decorations are in pretty
good condition, and this should be considered a hard to find machine set up
in this fashion.
Good + . . . . . $1450.00 SOLD!!!
Muller #16
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM The condition of this
Muller 16 Treadle Sewing Machine is very nice. It is smaller than
the Muller 18. The condition of the sewing head is super. The
decoration is near 100%. The finish on the table is original. The wood
grain dome top is nice with just one small dent. The one apology
on this unusual child's treadle is that one of the feet on the base was
broken off about 2" up the leg. It has been repaired and is
invisible
unless told or shown. It will not be noticeable when on display.
Good + . . . . . $2750.00 SOLD!!!
Daisy
Toy Treadle Sewing Machine / TSM The condition of this
Daisy Toy Treadle Sewing Machine is very nice. It is smaller than
most other toy treadles in scale and is very cute. Look at the
condition and detail of the original paint on the decorative cast iron
stand. The Daisy in the end panels is great. I have never seen
one this nice. The condition of the sewing head is good. There
is still
decoration visible on the painted surfaces. The sew plate is
tarnished, but the patent info and manufacturers info there is still
readable. This area is not pitted or rusty. The finish on the table
looks to be original and nice. The one apology
on this unusual child's treadle is that the glue joints on both the drawer
and wooden bonnet / top have failed. This would be a pretty straight
forward fix as all the parts are present, it just needs to be properly
clamped and glued.
Good + . . . . . $2950.00 SOLD!!!
