Charles Miller 1872 Patent # 50 Bronze Improved Joiners Plow Plane There
are just a handful of these rare planes known. They were made in both iron
and bronze / gunmetal as this one is. The design for this style plane was
patented by Charles Miller in 1872 and it was offered for just one year in
the Russell & Irwin catalog of 1875. Miller held other plane patents, and worked for Stanley for a short time prior to
this. It is believed Stanley made the plane, but it was never offered in any
of their catalogs. Patrick Leach has a write-up on this plane on his
website Blood & Gore, and Don Bosse also has a history / bio on Miller
on his website, both of which can be found with a Google search. There is
also info in Roger Smiths books. Past auction results can be found in
Clarence Blanchard's / Browns Tool Auction Catalogs.
The collector found this plane in California back in the 70's or
early 80's.
At that time it was practically unheard of and he knew nothing about it.
It was missing the outer fence. He found somebody that had an iron
model, and borrowed that fence to have one made for his. At the
time he did not know that the fence for the iron model was different from
the bronze one. Fast forward 30 - 40 years during which time a few other examples have turned up in
different tool auctions typically bringing anywhere from $15,000 - $23,000.
Prices have fallen off from the peaks, but it is still considered one of the
preier planes that can be found. Paul Hamler the well known master artisan in the
tool world began making a full size, and miniature version of this plane.
Examples of both
can be found on the market today, although they too are kind of
hard to find. This plane has been fitted with one of Hamler's
incredibly accurate and detailed outer fences. It is the proper size and
design. It fits perfectly, and looks great noting a slight color
difference. Everything else about this plane is original and in superb condition.

Stanley Miller Patent #
42 Bronze / Gunmetal Plow / Fillister Plane This
gunmetal # 42 Millers Patent Plane is as nice as one could ask for.
Includes 9 nice cutters. Proper bronze / gunmetal fence, and also the
straight iron fence. Note also how nice the rosewood handle is
and the condition of the horn which is oftentimes shortened.
Given the logo on the skate and
the one piece fence screws, I believe this is a type 4 dating from 1875 -
1876. Stanley developed and issued this line of planes known as
Millers Patents #' 41, 42, 43 and 44 after the short lived "early" 50 they had offered
for only one year about the same time. The Millers Patent Plane line was offered from
approx. 1871 thru 1897 and then continued another 20 years when the # designation was changed
to 141 - 143.
You do not find them this nice, or complete
very often. I can remember selling just the bronze wrap around fence
for 2K. A set of cutters still bring 500 or so. A bargain
waiting for the collection. Graphic, Rare & Very Nice!!

#45 Combination Plow Plane This Stanley #45 is one of those where
the cutters are in a sweetheart box, and the box and plane are marked a bit
later. This is typical. This one has a few minor spots of corrosion,
but like many from this era, saw little if any use. The #18 1/2 cutter is missing,
but the rest is all here, as are the slitter, cam, short and long rods, etc.
Overall it looks great. No instructions.

Stanley # 45 Combination Plane w/ Full Set of Hollows & Rounds / Nosing Attachment & Special CuttersCheck all the pics to see what all is included and the condition. It
is impressive. The plane is a Sweetheart era. The owner made
this custom box and filled it with not just the standard cutters, but also
those needed for the minty nice set of hollows and rounds he has carefully
fitted into the box. In addition to that he has included a number of
hard to find Record Beading cutters. All told there are 48 or so
cutters. The plane is complete with cam, slitter,
instructions, and several sets of extra long rods that the owner also custom
made. Very Nice!!

Stanley # 45 Multi Plane
This Stanley #45 Combination plane looks to have never been used. The box
on the other hand went through some rough times, and at some point got wet.
The top is in pieces, and there is some minor rust pitting on some of the small
parts from that. The rest of the plane is in excellent condition. It
has all the parts including the screw driver and original instruction pamphlet .
The cutters are in fine condition and have never been sharpened or needed it.
The box for them is nice, and has the Sweetheart logo. I shoot pics of
both sides of the fence and there is no wear at all to the Rosewood strip.
This plane will be a great user, or will display nicely. They are getting
tough to find in this condition.

Stanley # 45
Combination Plane in Original Box The plane itself is NDM or Near Dead Mint. So are the cutters. They show no signs of ever
being used and are in like new condition. The outer box is nice as well with some weak torn corners.
This is a later model that came with a double boxed set of cutters. The plane itself carries the notched
rectangle logo, and so I believe it dates from the late 50's or so. The cam, slitter, screwdriver, original instructions are all included. A nice
plane is exceptional condition.

# 45 Multi Plane This is the nicest #45 I have had or seen in years. The plane is near mint w/
close to 100% of the nickel. It shows no signs of use. There is a
Christmas sticker in the bottom of the box indicating this was given as a gift
by an aunt to her nephew during the depression. Think about that for a
moment. How many of your aunts have given you something this nice
----ever. This was given as a gift,
never used, and is ready to be re-gifted if you will. Only you are paying for it. The outer box
super. It is an early Sweetheart dating it form the
20's. The cutters are mint, never been used or ground and all here. It is complete in every
respect and has never been used . Screwdriver, spurs, cam slitter, instructions, and all the rest.
The nicest 45 I have offered in years.

Stanley #45 Combination Plow Plane
in Green Box Stanley #45's are a dime a dozen and readily available.
Finding one this early in its original box is a rare occasion. This is a different
situation and few # 45's combination planes are known in their original boxes from
this early or this period. This is approx. a type 4 and dates from the period
from 1890-1892 when Stanley first began to nickel plate this line of planes.
It appears it sat on a shelf for 100 or so years as the cutters show no evidence
of ever having been used. A rare piece to find in the box!!

Stanley # 45 Multi Plane This Stanley # 45 is in nice overall condition. The plane is very nice w/ 95% of the nickel or better.
The outer box has seen better days and the corners are loose, but did its job protecting and keeping the
parts together. The cutters are nice, never been ground and all here. The cover has a sweetheart
logo dating this plane from approx. the 20's thru the 30's. It has both fences and both sets of rods,
slitter and the cam. No instructions, but a nice 45 that will make a great user.

# A 45 Aluminum Multi Plane This is by far the rarest of all Stanley combination planes. The
aluminum # A 45 was made for about 20 years from 1915 - 1925. Very few were made during
that period and fewer have survived. This example is
in nice condition and the owner / collector documented its entire history or provenance on
the attached tag. He got it in a trade back in the 80's and had to
give up quite a pile of other old tools to add this to his collection.
The
overall condition is very nice, and there is little signs of use or abuse.
The cutters
are nice, have never been ground and all here in their original and proper boxes. It has both fences and both sets of rods
and the rare aluminum cam that came with the second generation model of this
plane. The outer wooden box is a craftsman made representation of an
original. A rare plane!!

slitter and cam are present. Just long rods. No rust, pitting, or other damage.
The body and fences are marked 45 and Stanley only appears on the cam. I believe
that means it was sold by either Sears or Wards and the cam added. A nice example that
will be a great user!!

# 55 Combination Plane in Original BoxThis is a later model Stanley # 55 Combination Plane. The plane itself, and the cutters are near mint
and virtually unused. I believe it dates from just before WWII from the logo on the skate and other features.
They made this unusual plane up to 1963 but if its features follow the 45 type study it would date from some period
before that and closer to WWII.
This plane looks to have never been used very lightly if at all. There is virtually no wear or tear from use.
The rosewood fences show little signs of ever having run against anything. Most all of the cutters look to be original grind and have original cosmoline or grease on them.
The box shows wear from sitting for so long. The corners of the outer box have ripped. Also one end of the cutter box is torn. It is complete with its tower,

#55 Combination Plow Plane in Original Box This is the nicest example of one of these
that I have had in 15 years. It has only been removed from the
brown waxed paper to inspect the parts. It is truly mint, and I
doubt it has ever touched a blade to wood. It is one of the last
models produced by Stanley before they finally ended production of this
plane in the 60"s. Sometimes these unused planes exhibit rust or
problems from improper storage, but that is not the case here.
This plane is dead mint with 100% shinny Nickel plating everywhere.
The cutters are bright and shinny as well.. The box is nice as
well noting the area of the label missing on the front.
I do not believe
that you will ever see a nicer example, so if you have the right place
to store it and are looking for a collector quality top shelf example of
a 55 plane, look no further.

auxiliary tower and shoe, both sets of rods, the cam, slitter, all the cutters in the 4 row box,
and more. It even has the original instruction pamphlet. (rear page
w/ tear). The cutters are mint and show no signs of ever having been used.
There is no rust / pitting or even storage rust.
This later model 55 has the notched rectangle logo, dating it after 1939 and up
until about 1960. This plane shows just the slightest
indication that it was ever used noted by light rub marks on the inside of the
Rosewood fence. The box is OK and has a couple of
splits at the corners and top edge splits as one would expect
to see from a 50 +
year old cardboard box.

sweetheart era plane dating from approx 1925 thru 1935 and the later style
sweetheart logo is on the skate of the main body.
The nickel plating on the main body, fences and other body part is 98% or better. There is no
rust / pitting and just traces of storage rust in the corners where the skate
meets the body. It is really nice overall. The finger joint pine wooden box is nice, and a rare variation as most
55's from this era are found in paste board boxes. There are some minor losses
to the painted decal on the top, and some other wear to the finish on the box,
but overall it is very nice.
It has the
auxiliary tower but the shoe is missing. This is the only apology I see.
Both sets of rods, the cam, slitter, and original screwdriver are present.
There are 56 cutters housed in the 4 row section provided at the end of the original flip top wooden
box. The cutters are near mint and show no signs of ever having been used
or sharpened. It appears this plane was used once,
noted by light rub marks on the inside of the smaller Rosewood fence and then put up on the shelf to sit for
the next 80 some years. The instruction
pamphlet or owners manual is a reprint.
A super Stanley # 55 combination
plane in the original box with all original parts. These planes are becoming ever more
difficult to find in this nice condition and seldom found in this style box. Highly recommended.

little or no use. The box did a good job protecting it, and does show its
age The nickel plating on the main body, fences and other body part is 98% or
better. The box is just fair with peeling paper and losses. There is wear to the
corners and covering as well as the stains you see.
This Stanley 55 has the auxiliary tower, both sets of rods, the cam, slitter, original screwdriver,
nickers, and instructions. The 54 original cutters are in like new
condition and are housed in the 4 row box seen above. The cardboard
cover looks great. The cutters themselves are mint and show no signs of
ever having been used or sharpened.

# 55 Combination Plane in Original BoxThis is a later model Stanley #
55 Combination Plane. The plane itself, and the cutters are near mint
and virtually unused. I believe it dates from just before WWII from
the logo on the skate and other features. They made this unusual plane
up to 1963 but if its features follow the 45 type study it would date from some period
before that and closer to WWII.
This plane looks to have never been
used. There is no wear or tear from use. The rosewood fences
show no signs of ever having run against anything. It is complete with
its tower, cam, screwdriver, extra spurs, long and short rods, instructions,
and even wax paper that the parts were wrapped in. The cutters still
have original cosmoline or grease on them. The outside of the box
shows some wear from just sitting for so long. Also one end of the
cutter box is torn. You just do not find them this nice anymore.

No. 143 Plow Plane The Stanley No. 141 &
143 took the place of the earlier Millers patent plow planes #41 - 44. This example is in overall
good condition. John Walters guide states the No. 141 was offered from 1887 - 1918
and the 143 was offered up to the beginning of WWII.
This plane has a sweetheart stamp on the skate, and Stanley marked fence
dating it from after 1918 thus making it a 143 even though it has the holes in the skate of a 141. At least
that is what I have been told by Bon Bosse, the recognized authority on the subject of Miller
Patent planes and type studies for them. It would seem Stanley ran out of
skates w/o holes and used 141 skates for a few years near the end.
Examples with this feature are known in the original box which would tend to
confirm the theory and explain the later skate w/ 141 holes on a 143 plane.
It comes with 9 proper thin plow cutters plus the slitter and spur or nicker.
It has one front nose piece. The aux. bullnose is not here, and even though
it seems it should have a fillister bed given the holes in the skate, it is
proper w/o one. Nice enough!!
