Bailey Victor # 7 size plane is in very nice original condition. Leonard Bailey's "Victor"
line planes were produced
from 1875 thru 1888 after Leonard Bailey had left Stanley's

covers the history in great detail, and is worth the read.

No.
1 Victor Block Plane by Leonard Bailey & Co.
Nice condition. Good Cutter, adjuster works, no pitting.
Owner did stamp his name on the side Leonard Bailey produced the
Victor line of planes when he ventured out on his own after leaving
Stanley's
employ. It was a relatively short lived endeavor as he went back to
them. See above for details and history of
this line of planes. Good + . . . . . $375.00 SOLD!!
Eclipse #2 Size Smooth Plane
There seems to be some confusion in the tool world as to the origin,
maker, and retailer of this #2 size smooth plane. John Walters calls it
the #1202 Defiance. There seems to some that believe they were offered by Montgomery Wards, and that
Stanley made them. Roger Smith pictures one and identifies it as a
Stanley. What say you? A nice condition and a hard to find small # 2 size smooth plane.
Good + . . . . . $125.00 SOLD!!
Leonard
Bailey # 6 Size Vertical Post Fore Plane
Here is another example of Leonard Bailey's early work before he sold out to
and began working for Stanley. It is a 18 inch long
# 6 size vertical post fore plane. It is the nicest of the batch
The wood on this one is nice and looks proper. The proper cutter is marked Moulson. The
lever cap on this plane appears to be correct.
The plane body is
nice, and rust or pit free. The nut is marked properly, but the knurling
is different and less rounded than on the others. All in all a very nice
example. Another rare and desirable plane!!Good + . . . . . $995.00 SOLD!!
Leonard
Bailey # 5 Size Vertical Post Jack Plane
Here is another example of Leonard Bailey's early work before he began working for Stanley. It is a 12 inch long
vertical post jack plane.
If Roger Smiths descriptions and information about known examples are right this plane
also has some mixed / matched parts. The proper cutter is marked Moulson
but is very short. The
solid lever cap on this plane appears to be from an early, but later than proper plane as well.
The handle looks good, but the horn looks to be shortened a bit from the norm.
It may be a later replacement. The plane body is
nice, and rust or pit free. Another rare and desirable plane!!Good + . . . . . $495.00
SOLD!!
Leonard Bailey & Co # 0 1/2 Victor Block
Plane The Victor
0 series of block planes had flared sides. The 0 1/2 was the same w/ an
adjuster. The 00 had nickel trim as did the 000.
The #1 & #2 planes had flat sides, adjustable throats and the cutter
adjustment. The sides were excelsior style. These could be
had in different finishes as the 1 3/4 or the 2 3/4. The bodies are
drilled to accept a rear handle which would change it to a 1 1/4 w/ rear
handle or 1 1/2 with handle and nickel trim. The same with the 7" #2
becoming a 2 1/4 or 2 1/2. Walters dates all of them as 1875 thru 1888.
If you find that confusing, it is, and you need a copy of Walters book and some
reprints of old catalogs to sort it all out.
This example
is an 0 1/2 if I am not mistaken and all correct and nice. The cutter has lots of life left and the
adjuster performs as it should. These are getting difficult to find.
Good . . . . . $295.00 SOLD!!
Seldon Bailey / Bailey Tool Co # 3 Size Defiance Smooth Plane
This line of planes was offered for about 10 years back in the 1870's.
Although Seldon and Leonard Bailey were not directly related there was a
connection, and for a period of time when Leonard was in contract disputes
with Stanley he was connected with Seldon in Woonsocket Rhode Island when
this and the Victor line of planes were being produced.. The #3 size
is the smallest size they made. Over the years there were a few
changes made in the cap design, and the blade adjuster. Many of
these planes are found damaged, but this one is all OK. The tabs on
the cap are good, and the body is not cracked or damaged in the area they
work.. The adjuster is also good. The top of the rear handle has been
carefully repaired.
It is ready for the next collector to display it as an example of a hard to find
historically significant collectible plane. Recommended!!Good + . . . . . $375.00 SOLD!!
Leonard Bailey's
Victor # 3 Smooth Plane
The tag on the side of this one indicates I first sold it to the collector
20 some years ago. The overall condition is very nice noting
that it appears the black finish or japanning has been enhanced with paint
added to the adjuster in places I do not think is proper. It looks
all original, just repainted. Other than
that, this plane is all right, and nice.
It is ready for the next collector to display it as an example of a hard to find
historically significant plane from the period when Leonard Bailey struck
out on his own and developed this line of planes to compete with Stanley's
line. Recommended!!Good + . . . . . $450.00 SOLD!!

structural damage or issues. Nice enough!!

The Victor line of planes was a great design and well received

This plane has not been fiddled with or over cleaned. There is little rust or pitting on the body and sole. The throat is good.

later and with the center slot makes the adjuster inoperable. There is approx.

Leonard Bailey
Patented 1858 Smooth Plane
This is a rare and historically
significant patented plane by Leonard Bailey. It is in
excellent original condition. The patent was granted on August 31 1858
and concerns the lever cap and the means to hold a cutter in place in a
plane. This is one of the first plane related patents Leonard Bailey
was granted. Leonard Bailey designed and produced this
plane before licensing the basic idea to and beginning to work for Stanley
Rule & Level Co. This basic design for lever caps later became the standard means
of holding a cutter in place that was used by many makers in later metal bodied
planes.
Both the nose of the plane, and the lever cap are marked with the Bailey
1858 Patent info. The patent # is 21.311 and can easily be viewed
online.
The condition is very nice. The body is full height and the throat is good.
The stamp on the nose is clear and strong. The incised patent info on the lever cap
is nice as well. It has a proper, nice long Molson cutter in it. These
unusual planes do not turn up very often. Opportunity!! Highly recommended!!

Victor
#12 1/2 Adjustable Block Plane This
clean little example of one of Leonard Bailey's Victor Line Block Planes has a trace
of nickel on the sides making it a 12 1/2 rather than a #12. What is here is
a clean little plane with no damage to speak of, and just a trace of texture form
ever so light pitting on the sides and sole. The adjuster is nice, operational,
and the cutter is in the second hole, and has 3 more to go. Hard to find and
becoming ever harder.Good . . . . . . . .

Leonard Bailey & Co # 12 Victor Pocket Block
Plane
This Victor #12 is a very nice plane. There is no damage, rust or
pitting, and a
lot of the original japanning remains. The cutter is in the first hole
so it has not been used or sharpened much. The adjuster works
properly. These are getting difficult to find.

Leonard Bailey / Victor # 20 Compass Plane
This Leonard Bailey / victor #20 Compass plane dates
from the period of time when Leonard Bailey was off on his own after having
sold his patents and ideas to Stanley, left their employ and struck out on
his own.
The condition is very nice and
original. The front and rear handles / caps are original and not
reproductions. They are oftentimes missing and it is a rare occurrence
to find them present. After Stanly bought out Bailey's patents a
second time this plane evolved to the popular Stanley version of the Victor
#20 compass plane. I have several of them listed on the appropriate
page if that is what you are looking for. This one is in collector
condition and deserves a spot high up on the shelf.
Fine . . . . $550.00 SOLD!
Leonard Bailey's
Victor # 00 Block Plane
The numbering of Victor planes can be confusing. The collector has this
one identified as a 00 which would mean it has flared sides, is 7" long, has
a 1 3/4" cutter and nickel trim. The cap and cap knob are nonmagnetic, and
I assume recasts in brass. The adjuster is nice, as is the cutter. The body
is nice and not damaged or cracked. A nice looking plane.
It is ready to display as an example of a hard to find Bailey Victor block
plane.

Bailey's Little Victor

Victor #0 1/2 Block Plane
This example is about as nice as one could hope for. Lots of finish, no rust
or pitting, the cutter is long and nice, the adjuster works great. Planes
from this line are becoming ever more difficult to find, and this is a good one.

Leonard
Bailey "Victor" No. 1 Block Plane Very Nice!!
Lots of original japanning. Good long cutter. Good Adjuster. Adjustable
throat. No damage!!
Leonard Bailey produced the
Victor line of planes after he broke off from Stanley and went out on his own
and introduced the popular Victor line of planes and tools. This
occurred in the 1880s. He later went back to Stanley. Roger Smith lays out the story in full in his PTAMPIA books.
It is a good read.

Victor #8 1/2 Jointer Plane
This Victor
8 1/2 jointer retains
most of it original japanning and large amounts of the original nickel
plating on the handle and knob. There is no damage to the weak points at the
sides, and the adjuster works just fine.
Leonard Bailey produced this line of planes during one of his separations
from Stanley. They were well received and highly regarded. Stanley did not
like the competition and sued him over their production. Who won is up for
debate, but in the end Leonard went back to Stanley and the
Victor line was
discontinued after about a 10 year production time.

Leonard Bailey's # 0 1/2 Victor Block
Plane
The 0 1/2 block plane is 7" long and has a 1 3/4" wide cutter.
The # 0 1/2 Victor Block Planes distinctive features are that it has
the blade adjuster, a nonadjustable throat and flared sides.
Other Victor planes with the 0 thru 000 designation differ in having, or not having, a
cutter adjustment, and the finish being japanned or nickeled
This is a
nice looking example. The japanning
appears to have been redone. Oftentimes the adjusters are stripped or
non functioning for one reason or another. This ones is OK. The
cutter is proper and marked although short and hard to read.

Patented Victor # 1 1/4 Block Plane by Leonard
Bailey This style of block plane
is not all that rare, but to have one with the auxiliary tail is rather uncommon.
This plane is known as a Victor # 1 1/4, and was produced by Leonard Bailey during
the late 1800's after he had left the employ of Stanley Rule and Level and had once
again started his own company producing the Victor line of planes and other tools
under a new company name. The history of this famous and prolific inventor
of planes and other tools is long and colorful, as are some of the other stories
about the men who were involved in the tool making industry during this period.
The condition of this example is superb and I wish I had learned about such things
15 years earlier than I did when the chances of finding such pieces were far better.
The odds of such a plane showing up today at any venue other than a high quality
tool auction are somewhere between slim, nil and none, but if by chance you have
something similar and are wanting to sell it please contact me

Bailey's
#5 Victor Jack Plane Here is another rare and
desirable plane from Leonard Bailey's famous Victor line of planes.
This line of planes was produced for a short period between 1875 and
1888, the period of time when Leonard Bailey had left Stanley Rule and Level
Co. and was again
out on his own producing a superior line of metal bodied woodworking planes and
related tools. At one point he was working out of location producing these planes in
RI, that bears his same last name but actually was run by a different fellow Seldon Bailey.
This example has some areas of paint loss and is
dirty, but it is basically damage free and will clean to be very nice.
There is some light pitting on the cutter and chip breaker, but little if any on
the body. The adjuster works as it should, the throat is nice, as are the
proper metal handle and knob. A few years ago these Victor planes seemed as
though they were plentiful at shows and tool meetings but the supply has now pretty
much dried up and you rarely see or are offered any of these planes any more at
tool shows or even on the internet. A good example for the collector or the
investment minded as they are just going to get even harder to find and even more
sought after and desirable as time goes by. Recommended!

Leonard Bailey's #3 Size Victor Smooth
Plane Here is a rare and desirable plane from
Leonard Bailey's famous Victor line of planes. This line of planes was produced
for a short period between 1875 and 1888, the period of time when Leonard
Bailey had left Stanley's Rule and Levels employ and was again out on his own producing
a superior line of woodworking planes and related tools in competition with Stanley.
This example has some minor and repairable problems, but it in overall good condition.
First there is a crack in the top of the front knob. It is cosmetic, but it
is there. The pin in the adjuster to move the cutter is missing and need to be replaced.
The chip breaker is missing as well, but the small rectangular center piece is present,
so the cutter still locks in place nicely. The body is very nice, the handle
is nice, and the blade cap is good. There is no damage in the weak area where
the cap slides in, or near the throat. The price reflects the problems which
are correctable.Good . . . . . . . . $695.00
Leonard Bailey's #3 Size Victor Smooth
Plane Here is a rare and desirable plane from
Leonard Bailey's famous Victor line of planes.

hope for.

Defiance #3 Smooth Plane
The Bailey Tool Co. series of planes known by the name Defiance were designed and
produced for a very short period of time during the last quarter of the 19th century.
Once considered relatively common and often bringing less than far more recent an
plentiful Stanley models, planes from this series and era have now become very difficult
to find. Later when all the dust settles, and when values stabilize and the
real rarity or scarceness is better understood these planes and those from
the Victor line, as well as many other unusual or obsure patented planes will be
the ones to further escalate and climb in value and finally attain their proper
levels. Bottom line is that they are rare, significant, and undervalued
in today's market. This example is in overall very nice and retains much of
its original japanning. There is no rust orll functions
and is not loose. The beaded front knob has a tight crack that is hardly noticeable,
and the handle is nice. The fragile a weak point on these planes. It still functions
and is not loose. The beaded front knob has a tight crack that is hardly noticeable,
and the handle is nice. The fragile adjustment mechanism works as it should.
The cutter is long, nice, and properly marked. Overall a very nice example
of a difficult to find plane.

Bailey
Tool Co. Defiance E Block Plane
The Bailey Tool Co of Woonsocket RI has only a small connection to Leonard Bailey,
and it is believed he had little to do with the Defiance line of planes that this
firm produced. Leonard Bailey at one point did work out of the same Company
when he was producing his Victor line of planes, but the patents and design features
of the Defiance line of planes were produced by a different group of individuals.
These planes connection to Stanley relate to the fact that at one point they were
offered in Stanley's catalogs. This series of planes had some design flaws
and weak casting areas, and are often found damaged. This one is not.
The lever cap is nice, and the ears to hold it in place are undamaged. The
blade adjuster is working properly. The cutter is very faintly marked.
The japanning is approx 80%. The sides and sole look great with no problems
other than the flea bite nick in the throat as can be seen in the picture.
Tough to find.

Leonard
Bailey's Patented 1855 #3 Size Split Frame Plane One
of the first and certainly the most important series of patents ever granted for
a metallic woodworking plane were those issued to Leonard Bailey for this model
plane, most commonly referred to as the "split frame", and his other scraper plane
that he was making during this early period in the 1850's. Bailey only produced
these unusual planes for a few short years and it is not known exactly how many
of them were actually produced. It is in absolutely fantastic condition, and
second to none in quality, workmanship and finish. It came out of a basement
with a 1950's Sargent Hercules plane in green, and the lady who had it could not
see the difference between the two.

Leonard
Bailey's 2nd Patent for Blade Adjuster Here is an extremely rare plane that utilizes
Leonard Bailey's second patent from June 22nd 1859 for an adjustable cutter.
This razee style jointer is 28" long and just under 3 1/8" wide. It is marked
J. Kellogg Amherst Ma. on the nose, and the owner T. D. Thomas stamped his
name into the tail. This is only the second example of one of these planes
that I have ever seen other than the one pictured in
Roger Smiths book PTAMPIA. He states that others are known, but few have made
it the trading tables or auction block since I have been paying attention. This
example is in nice condition noting a nice early repair to the tote tip, and
some minor age cracks in the sole. The lever cap is solid and has a rounded
lever spring. The cutter is marked Moulson Bros Cast Steel and measures just
over 8" long. Bailey's adjustment piece is neatly and securely pinned to the
cutter. If not for the work of Roger Smith and other researchers like him,
this plane would be considered a mere curiosity as it has no patent information
or other identifying marks to be found anywhere on it, but it is a documented patent,
and Roger tells the story behind them not being marked. The beginning of the
end for wood bodied planes, and an important and rare step in the evolution or creationism
of metallic planes. When and where are you going to see the next one??

Leonard
Bailey's #7 Size 3 Screw Frog Plane This
is a rare plane that is not seen very often as they were only manufactured or produced
by Leonard Bailey in Boston for a couple years in the mid to late 1860's before
he went into partnership with Stanley. It has sometimes been called the missing
link
between Bailey's split frame models and vertical posts and the first Type 1
metal bodied planes that Stanley produced using Bailey's patents after he sold out
to Stanley in 1869. The distinguishing feature is that the rear of the frog
that was cast to receive a third screw to help hold
the frog in place. It was a short lived idea that was eliminated by the time
he sold out to Stanley. If they were not so rare this would be a great plane
to walk up on at a reasonable price as they look fairly common and much like a who
cares type 4 pre lateral version when first seen. Granted, they do not have
the pizzazz or graphic looks of Bailey's split frame models, but they deserve
a place right next to them on the shelf or in the collection documenting the development
of the metallic plane. It is only because of the research and effort by people
like Roger Smith that we can have an appreciation of just where this rare plane
fits into the scheme of things.

Leonard Bailey's #7 1/2 Victor
Jointer
Plane
Here is another example of a cobbled up plane the collector bought to
fill a missing hole in the collection. This and the previous example
look to be the work of another now dead CA collector who specialized in
Victor stuff, and sold the extras and lesser off to fund his collecting. He
has since died, and no more of his work / creations will be appearing on the
market.
This
example has a few good parts. The cutter is very nice, and full
length. The front knob is very nice. The rear handle looks ok
and has a new coat of
nickel .
The caps inner piece is a remake. The blade
adjuster is cobbled up and hardly functions The body has been welded
on one cheek as pictured. From a distance it looks OK.
It is ready for the next collector to display it as an example of a hard to find
plane. Displayed where it will not be examined too closely.

Leonard Bailey's #6 1/2 Victor Fore
Plane
As with other categories, when the collector got into buying and
collecting Victor planes he did so with a relish and reckless abandon.
He would appear at tool shows and buy nearly everything or anything that was there in
the category that he was currently focused on. He liked some dealers /
collectors, and would buy things he should not from them just because.
This plane is an example of that attitude and he did not get it from me.
The
nickel has been redone on the rear handle that has a broken tab.
The cap is recast and brass that has been plated. The blade
adjuster is brass and cobbled up. It hardly functions The front
knob cap is recast brass. The body is very nice. The cutter and
cap are nice.

plane. Displayed where it will not be examined too closely. .

Leonard
Bailey # 3 Size Vertical Post Smooth Plane Leonard
Bailey is considered one of the premier designers and was one of the earliest
producers of metal bodied planes in America. Prior to selling
his plane making business to, and beginning to work for Stanley in the late 1860s
he was designing and
producing his own line of planes in Winchester Mass.
The patent dates
stamped on the large brass wheel behind the frog are on this plane from 1855 & 1858.
Leonard Bailey's first
efforts at bench plane making are known as split frames, and their history and story
are told in detail in Roger Smiths works on American patented planes.
His
second efforts at bench plane making are known as vertical posts. Bailey moved his plane making
business from Winchester to Boston in 1861 and began producing this line of
bench planes with an adjustable frog. They
were simpler design than the earlier split frames, but still expensive to
produce, and given the economic situation of the times, along with the Civil War taking place,
sales were slow. These planes were made after 1861, and prior to 1869 when he sold the
business to Stanley who changed the frog design on their new line of metal
bodied planes shortly after.
If Roger Smiths descriptions and information about known examples are right this plane has some mixed / matched
parts. The cutter is marked Stanley, and should be a Moulson. The
solid lever cap appears to be from an early, but later than proper plane as well.
The handle looks to have been reworked in the horn area. and may be a complete
replacement The plane body is
nice, and rust or pit free. A rare and desirable plane!!
Good . . . . . $1995.00 SOLD!
Leonard Bailey's Victor #4 1/2 Smooth Plane
The tag on the side of this one indicates I sold it to the collector years ago.
I remember it as it was one of the first Victor planes I ever found back in the late 80's.
Even then they were pretty hard to find out in the bush. There are traces of nickel left on some of the
parts and so it would qualify as a 4 1/2 instead of a #4. There is one minor apology, that being
the small hole drilled in the side, probably by the original owner to allow a fence or depth stop to be used.
Other than that, this plane is all right, and nice.
It is ready for the next collector to display it as an example of a hard to find plane.
Fine . . . . . . $495.00 SOLD!!
Leonard Bailey's # 0 Victor Block
Plane
The number 0 Victor Block plane was the base model of this style block
plane that Leonard Bailey introduced after he left Stanley. It is
the same as the 0 1/2 but has no cutter adjustment. These were first
introduced in 1875. The patent for the adjuster was issued a year
later in 1876, but the 0 1/2 w/ an adjuster was not offered until 1883 according
to John Walters book / price guide.
This
is a nice condition plane. Note the cap is the earlier screw tightened
type as opposed to the cam style that was later as seen on the plane
below.
It is ready for the bench or shelf.Good + . . . . . $225.00
SOLD!!
Bailey
Tool Co. D Defiance Block Plane
Looks
OK at first glance, but the cap has been repaired, and the plane has been painted. The body
and cutter are nice. Good - . . . . . . . $165.00 SOLD!!
Defiance
Type Plane
The collector loved a mystery. The body of this plane looks very similar to
the Defiance line of planes produced in RI by Seldon Bailey and the Bailey Tool
co. of Woonsocket RI. Leonard Bailey was also involved w/ this outfit when
the Defiance and Victor lines of planes were produced there during his time away
from Stanley and that story is
told in detail in Roger Smiths books PTAMPIA vol. 1 & 2.
While the
body is shaped much like a Defiance plane, and the wood has the right shape and
age to be from that period, the frog and cutter are totally different from
anything seen on known Defiance or Bailey Tool Co planes. The only marking is
on the cutter. The Moulson cutter in it is the cutter preferred by
Leonard Bailey to use in his rare split frame planes. He also used them in
his rare 3 screw frog planes. The tag the collector wrote up indicates he
was a believer. The small tag on the side rail indicates I sold it to him
in the early 90's. I sure do not remember it, or where I got it, but that
was when I was into a lot of barns and out of the way places on the east coast.
The frog is like a prelateral Stanley product, but the brass wheel is
completely different, not marked and the knurling does not look like 19th
century. As I said a mystery. Hard to find
and probably one of a kind!!
Good +. . . . . . . $150.00
SOLD!!
